Catholic News Agency reports Governor Schwarzenegger spoke to a meeting of the Catholic Healthcare Association (CHA) in San Diego last week on the topic of healthcare reform, pledging to pray "twenty rosaries every day" if that is what is necessary to have the California legislature pass his health care plan.
Schwarzenegger described California's uninsured population as a "moral crisis", saying 6.7 million Californians are uninsured, including one million children.
Addressing the CHA audience, Schwarzenegger described incoming CHA chairman Lloyd Dean as an "action hero" who had turned his organisation's finances around.
Lloyd Dean, the governor said, had helped assemble "an unprecedented and historic coalition of hospitals, doctors, insurers, patients’ groups, business groups, and labour groups" to support Schwarzenegger's health care plan, which he said is based upon shared responsibility among employers, healthcare providers, insurers, individuals and government.
"And I know that, with your help, we can do it," he said. "And even if it takes praying 20 rosaries every day, I will be on my knees praying the 20 rosaries, but we are going to get the job done!"

Kahlil Chami's suggestion that Australian civil law should recognize the right
of men to have more than one wife simultaneously won't be going far. The
Attorney General has already said so and Australian public opinion would not
tolerate this element of Sharia law enshrining such inequality between men and
women.
But what about the future? Would such legislation make sense if equal opportunity was also given to women to have more than one husband? Is public hostility to the suggestion simply based on tradition or perhaps another example of an inherited Christian way of living? How do people of different backgrounds, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, no religion, resolve such differences?
In a pluralist democracy like Australia the different parties discuss the options and appeal to reason. While Parliaments make the laws, reason is what we should have in common across every grouping.
Last week Notre Dame University hosted an international conference at its beautiful Broadway campus on “Truth and Faith in Ethics”. More than 250 students, academics and members of the public assembled for three days to hear specialists in moral philosophy from around the English-speaking world discuss right and wrong, what makes a person good or happy (are they alternatives?) and how to keep our societies decent and civilized.
Some of the speakers were leaders in their field, known internationally as public intellectuals and all were respected professional thinkers from a variety of religious and irreligious backgrounds. No one appealed to Christian tradition, although it was recognized that different religions and different concepts of God bring various understandings of where goodness lies, with different ideas on e.g. justice, slavery, women and abortion.
The institutions of marriage and family are good examples. In Australia marriage is between a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others. The fact that Christ and Catholic tradition recommend this arrangement is important to me personally, but I recognize that this does not cut much ice with non-Christians.
Therefore in civil society supporters of legal privileges for heterosexual marriage have to explain why it is the best system to protect the rights of spouses and in particular is the best delivery system for society to encourage good children in becoming productive and cooperative adults. Unions of two men or two women should not receive equal legal privileges because they are not equally productive, not representative of the best in human nature.
The highlight of the conference was a discussion between Professor Ray Gaita, a non-believer from Australian Catholic University and Professor John Haldane, a Catholic from the secular university of St. Andrew in Scotland on whether God is necessary for morality.
Masterfully chaired by Phillip Adams, who described himself as a mangy old lion in a den of Christians (actually many non-believers were present and 50 people couldn’t get in), the evening was a model of civilized discourse. Everyone was led to think about goodness, meaning and awe.

Giáo xứ An Hải đă dâng Thánh lễ Tạ ơn kết thúc năm học và trao phần thưởng cho
100 em vừa là học sinh tiểu học, trung học cơ sở và trung học phổ thông với danh
hiệu là học sinh giỏi và tiên tiến.
Trong buổi tổng kết năm học này có các chương tŕnh văn nghệ của chính các em Thiếu nhi trong Giáo xứ, có sự giao lưu giữa Cha quản nhiệm với các em đạt học sinh tiên tiến và giỏi. Cha quản nhiệm cùng hát, cùng chơi vơi các em làm cho bầu khí thật vui vẻ.
Trước Thánh lễ Cha Kiện đă khen ngợi thành tích học tập của các em Thiếu nhi trong niên học vừa qua. Cha cũng mong muốn các em không những học văn hoá giỏi, nhưng c̣n phải siêng năng tham dự Thánh lễ và chịu khó học Giáo lư nưă để các em có được những kiến thức về Giáo lư sẽ giúp các em hiểu biết và sống Lời Chúa dạy hơn. Cha quản nhiệm đă dành lễ của Thiếu Nhi trong giáo xứ vào tối Thứ ba hằng tuần.
Sau những lời động viên, Cha quản nhiệm và Ban Hành Giáo phát phần thưởng cho các em. Số các em học sinh tiên tiến là 49, học sinh giỏi là 48 và 3 em đạt học sinh giỏi cấp Quận và Thành phố. Các em thực sự vui sướng v́ thực sự các em xứng đáng được nhận những phần thưởng do Cha quản nhiệm và Ban hành Giáo trao, các em đă nói lên tâm t́nh của ḿnh là luôn tạ ơn Chúa, cám ơn Cha quản nhiệm, Cha mẹ, thầy cô và Ban hành Giáo cũng như các anh chị Giáo lư viên.
Các em hứa với Chúa và Cha quản nhiệm rằng sẽ cố gắng hơn nữa trong năm học tới để có những thành tích trong học tập cao hơn nữa để khỏi phụ ḷng Cha quản nhiệm, Cha mẹ, Thầy cô và Ban hành giáo đă quan tâm.
Trong Thánh lễ cha quản nhiệm đă cùng các em dâng lên Thiên Chúa tâm t́nh Tạ ơn Chúa v́ những thành quả mà các em có được là do ơn Chúa và sự cố gắng vươn lên của mỗi em. Cha cũng dâng năm học mới cho Chúa.
Thánh lễ đă kết thúc, nhưng những lời khích lệ của Cha quản nhiệm vẫn c̣n đọng lại trong các em Thiếu nhi trong Giáo xứ với những ấn tượng khó quên. Các em sẽ trở về gia đ́nh sẽ cố gắng hơn nữa luôn là những con ngoan, tṛ giỏi, Thiếu nhi trong Giáo xứ, ngoan ngoăn, thánh thiện, thật thà và làm nhiều việc tốt cho Giáo Hội và xă hội.

WYD Announce 'Way' of the Cross
WYD08 have
announced the six locations for the Stations of the Cross, set to be one of the
most moving features of WYD, along with the details on how pilgrims will watch
the spectacular.
“Pilgrims will be allocated to one of six sites excluding The Art Gallery of NSW which is not a public venue. There will also be spaces for the general public, primarily at Darling Harbour,” a press release from WYD08 last week said.
“Crowds will not be able to follow the actors, and will remain at a live site to watch the proceedings via large screens, awaiting the travelling production to come to their venue,” the press release continued.
The event route will start at St. Mary’s Cathedral and end at Barangaroo.
“The world will be mesmerised by this beautiful depiction of Christ’s Passion, played out across some of Sydney’s famous landmarks,” said WYD08 spokesman Fr Mark Podesta.
However preparing for the Stations of the Cross during rehearsals, which have been underway since early this year, has also been a moving process for the members of the cast of over 100 actors.
Clare McAuley, 22, is one of 18 actresses whose role is to be a Woman of Jerusalem. She will be in stations 9 – 13, which includes the station 12 - Christ’s Crucifixion.
Rehearsing this particular scene, she says, has had a powerful impact upon her.
“Being involved in the Way of the Cross has helped me to pray. It has brought the crucifixion of Jesus very much alive in my imagination. It’s a pretty awful thing to catch the eye of Christ dying on the cross,” Miss McCauley says.
“The performance will probably encourage the pilgrims to reflect and pray. The end result is going to be very beautiful, spectacular and moving,” she continues.
The Stations of the Cross re-enactment is broken up into various scenes and staged settings but pilgrims will not be permitted to be present at all venues such as the NSW Art Gallery, which will stage Station Three: Jesus before the Sanhedrin.
The Stations of the Cross will be directed by Fr Franco Cavarra while renowned designer Michael-Scott Mitchell – who created the Cauldron at the 2000 Olympics – has designed the sets.
Composers Anne Boyd and Fr Geoffrey Abdullah were commissioned to compose the music to accompany the re-enactments of Stations eight and three respectively, while the repertoire is also set to include work by Mozart and Indigenous artists.
The 13 Stations will be acted out from 3pm-6pm at the following six major CBD
locations, on Friday 18 July.

Final Registrations Rolling In
In other news, registrations for World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) have been rolling in, with just under 200,000 in the system, organisers said this week.
“Our estimations for the event have always been based on 125,000 international and 100,000 domestic registered pilgrims,” said WYD08 Chief Operating Officer Danny Casey.
Earlier this week, Mr Casey verified that by midday, Monday 23 June there were 132,671 individuals [in the system] who had completed their registrations by providing WYD08 organisers with all of their individual details.
“In addition, a further 64,181 have made a commitment and are partly through their registration,” Mr Casey continued.
“This indicates that almost 197,000 people have registered to date.”
Mr Casey said that with three weeks to go, the WYD08 estimate of around 225,000 registrations are expected to be met or even exceeded.

Roof erected for Youth Day papal mass
A
massive roof has been hauled into place at Sydney's Randwick Racecourse where
the Pope will say mass during next month's World Youth Day event.
The roof, measuring 30 by 40 metres, has been hoisted 25 metres off the ground above a sanctuary where the papal alter will be constructed.
World Youth Day coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher says the sanctuary will now be decorated with iconic Australian designs.
"Soon, they will start applying the iconic Australian design elements such as 'Marjorie's Bird' - an Indigenous painting depicting the Holy Spirit by Tiwi Islander artist Marjorie Liddy," he said.
The sanctuary is big enough to hold 500 cardinals and bishops, the World Youth Day choir and and 80-piece orchestra.
'Indoor camping'
School gyms and assembly halls, empty for the term holiday, will be used to house World Youth Day pilgrims next month.
Up to 10,000 people visiting for the event will be accommodated in 93 state schools around Sydney.
Catholic Schools are already accommodating 70,000 people.
World Youth Day spokeswoman Kristina Keneally says 'indoor camping' at the schools will not be flash but will be safe.
She says the schools involved will be fitted with extra smoke alarms and temporary shower and bathroom amenities.
Traffic
The State Government is again urging CBD workers to stay at home during the week of World Youth Day because of severe traffic problems.
Authorities are hoping to reduce the number of cars in the city by at least 30 per cent during the week.
Ms Keneally has released more details of road closures and she says the biggest disruptions will be on Monday July 14 and Thursday July 17.
"The city will be no place for cars during the World Youth Day week. Leave your car at home," she said.
"If you're coming for the celebrations or you need to come to the CBD for work, please use public transport and if you're going to use public transport, plan ahead."
Ms Keneally says the organisers still expect the crowd target will be met.
"They've advised us that they have registrations well in excess of 130,000," she said.
"They have advised us on top of that they have financial commitments that put them very close to their target."

This online social networking site was put together by John and Robert Toone from the U.K. and is sponsored by the Sydney World Youth Day. In effect it is like a Catholic Facebook.
It will revolutionize the way young Christians will follow their religious interests and share their enthusiasms with the like-minded, or those who are simply curious. Already young people are organizing their social life and travel, keeping in contact with their friends and exploring career options through the internet, even for priesthood.
The immense volume of traffic indicates the potential influence of this medium for good or ill. Many will be surprised to discover the two topics which provoke the most use of the internet: pornography and religion.
On reflection we should not find this too surprising because an interest in pornography is never advertised publicly and many, especially from a non-religious background, are reluctant to admit publicly to an interest in religion.
Xt3, a virtual world for communication, evangelization and networking, already has 10,000 users with the numbers growing steadily even before the World Youth Day, when all registered pilgrims will be invited to join at www.xt3.org
450 people have joined the “ask a Priest” group, while we have 100 young volunteers online to assist in welcoming and building this virtual community. And 200 kind people, mostly young, have asked to be my friends! The network will evolve to meet the interests of its young users.
Would Christ use the internet if he was alive today as 2000 years ago he had to teach in a world without even a microphone, a newspaper or a radio?
I am sure he would, because God gave clever people the intelligence to develop modern technology.
The Vatican was the first State with its own radio station, inaugurated by Pope Pius XI and Marconi and the first country to put all its documents on the net. Technology can be abused but it is good in itself, a blessing.
The brief history of the internet, which has its origin in the U.S.A. in 1973, is like the history of transport with several threads and significant developments at different stages.
Before the World Wide Web was trialed in Switzerland in 1990 at the CERN laboratories, a huge research facility, the internet was useful for accessing and even exchanging information, but it was limited, inflexible, and confined to a few users.
Various technical developments were important, such as the invention of the mouse, but the breakthrough came in 1993 when the CERN’s directors declared www technology would be free. No fees.
By the end of 1994 a million browser copies were in use and by 1998, 750,000 commercial sites existed on the world wide web. The field is wide open.
The devil need not have the best lines, nor the best sites.

‘Jesus’ and ‘Mary’ actors climb bridge to envision WYD Stations route

Stuto and Maria Dixon, the actors who will play Jesus and Mary in World Youth
Day 2008’s Stations of the Cross, on Friday climbed the Sydney Harbor Bridge
with BridgeClimb Sydney to observe the route of the Stations from a “bird’s-eye
view.”
BridgeClimb Sydney, an official provider for World Youth Day 2008, is a business that provides public access to the catwalks and ladders of the Sydney Harbor Bridge, according to its website.
“The Sydney Harbour Bridge provides a great vantage point to witness the Stations of the Cross and other World Youth Day events as they happen around Sydney’s harbour,” said BridgeClimb’s Managing Director Todd Coates.
The two actors were joined on the bridge climb by the young Sydney priest and World Youth Day spokesman Father Mark Podesta. Both actors for the event have been rehearsing with 100 fellow cast members over the past few months.
“The world will be mesmerized by this beautiful depiction of Christ’s Passion, played out across some of Sydney’s famous landmarks,” Father Podesta said.
The Stations of the Cross will be performed on Friday, July 18 at six major Sydney-area locations. The Stations will begin at St. Mary’s Cathedral with the first Station, the Last Supper. There, Pope Benedict XVI will offer a prayer and remarks to begin the commemoration.
The second Station, the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, will take place at the Domain, a large open space near Sydney. The performance will proceed to the Art Gallery of New South Wales and then the Sydney Opera House.
The seventh Station, in which Jesus is helped by Simon of Cyrene, will take place on board a floating pontoon in Darling Harbor.
The remaining Stations will be performed on stages in Barangaroo, a waterfront district.
Pilgrims will be allocated spots at the various performance sites except the Art Gallery. The general public will be able to see the re-enactment at Darling Harbor.
Crowds will not be allowed to follow the actors, but can remain at a site to watch the proceedings live on large screens as they wait for the performance to arrive at their venue.
The World Youth Day Stations of the Cross will be directed by Father Franco Cavarra, while the sets are designed by Michael-Scott Mitchell, who designed the cauldron used for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The event’s music will include pieces from Mozart and indigenous artists, with pieces for stations eight and three composed by Anne Boyd and Father Geoffrey Abdullah, respectively. Costumes will be designed by Jamie Lynch.
The World Youth Day event will take place from July 15 to July 20.

THIẾT - Như 3 năm gần đây, mỗi mùa hè lại là dịp để các Huynh Trưởng (GLV) giáo
phận Phan Thiết có điều kiện gặp gỡ, chia sẻ, huấn luyện và đặc biệt là bày tỏ
t́nh hiệp nhất trong ơn gọi làm Huynh Trưởng với nhau, với Giáo Hội và với Chúa
Giêsu Thánh Thể.
Mỗi năm 1 trong số 5 giáo hạt được chọn để đăng cai tổ chức đại hội. Năm nay, ngày 17/6/2008, hạt Phan Thiết đăng cai và giáo xứ Thanh Hải là nơi qui tụ khoảng 1.000 Huynh Trưởng (GLV) đại diện cho 1.500 Huynh Trưởng (GLV) thuộc Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể trong giáo phận.
Từ 8g sáng tại sân nhà thờ Thanh Hải, hầu hết các Huynh Trưởng thuộc các xứ đoàn đều có mặt. Trừ một vài xứ không thể có mặt v́ những lư do riêng. Đúng 8g30 khai mạc th́ đă có tới gần 1.000 Huynh Trưởng.
Sau khi tập trung ở tiền sảnh nhà thờ, cùng với các Huynh Trưởng, là Qúy Cha tuyên úy của phong trào làm nghi thức chào cờ. Cha FX. Nguyễn Quang Minh, Tổng Tuyên Úy Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể của Giáo Phận đă chào mừng, ban huấn từ và tuyên bố khai mạc ngày ĐẠI HỘI HIỆP NHẤT IV - HUYNH TRƯỞNG (Giáo Lư Viên) - GIÁO PHẬN PHAN THIẾT (17.6.2008). với chủ đề: TRAU DỒI ĐỨC TIN KITÔ GIÁO.
Sau đó, các Huynh Trưởng sinh hoạt chung bằng các băng reo, bài hát, tṛ chơi thật vui nhộn, lành mạnh.
Thánh lễ được cử hành lúc 10g. Đức Ông J.B. Lê Xuân Hoa, Tổng Đại Diện giáo phận, thay mặt Đức Giám Mục chủ sự Thánh Lễ đồng tế cùng với 2 Cha Hạt Trưởng Phan Thiết và Hàm Thuận Nam. Cha Giám Đốc Chủng Viện thánh Nicolas giảng lễ, Cha Quản Lư Toà Giám Mục, qúy Cha xứ và các Cha Tổng Tuyên Uư và Tuyên Úy Phong Trào TNTT Giáo phận.
Đức Giám Mục Giáo Phận bận công tác mục vu, nhưng Ngài vẫn luôn quan tâm tới Phong Trào TNTT, nên Ngài đă hỗ trợ 12.000.000$ cho ngày Đại Hội. Số c̣n lại, mỗi Huynh Trưởng đóng 20.000$. Các Cha Tuyên Uy cũng hỗ trợ một phần.
Xoay quanh chủ đề: TRAU DỒI ĐỨC TIN KITÔ GIÁO, qua Thánh Lễ, các sinh hoạt, giao lưu, ăn trưa, báo cáo, văn nghệ, Chầu Ḿnh Thánh Chúa, ăn tối ..., các Huynh Trưởng tái khám phá ra sự hiện diện kỳ diệu của Thiên Chúa trong thế giới, trong cuộc sống con người, trong lịch sử Giáo Hội và nhất là trong bí tích Thánh Thể bằng chính đức tin của ḿnh.
Sau khi bầu lại các Huynh Trưởng mới trong Ban Nghiên Huấn Giáo Phận là nghi thức bế mạc lúc 18g30. Mọi người bùi ngùi, xúc động lúc chia tay, tạm biệt nhưng luôn vững tin có Thiên Chúa cùng đồng hành, có Giáo Hội nâng đỡ, có anh, có chị, có em cùng chia sẻ trong ơn gọi Huynh Trưởng (GLV), nhờ đó công việc Giáo Dục Đức Tin cho các em Thiếu Nhi sẽ ngày càng tốt đẹp như ḷng Chúa mong ước.

1/2 million hits + Stage 2 to launch tomorrow
In
just 25 days, the yBenedict website has already passed a half a million hits and
with the second stage of the site to be launched tomorrow, the first million is
expected to be reached within days. "Since Cardinal Pell launched the site with
50 days till WYD, the hit rate has rapidly increased," comments Bridget Spinks,
the Communications Officer for Towards2008.
"We are absolutely delighted that we have so quickly reached the 1/2 million threshold and we are very grateful to all our faithful contributors and readers across the world."
Statistics - HERE COME THE SPANISH SPEAKERS!
Since the formal launch of yBENEDICT, the Spanish speaking readership has since joined the English speaking audience across Australia and overseas.
By the end of May, www.ybenedict.org had a reported 76 per cent Australian readership, according to site generated statistics. But by mid-June, the international readership had doubled from 24% in May to 48% in the mid-June statistics.
In May, Argentina was the top Spanish-speaking country that 'hit' the site coming in at Number 19 on the list of top countries accessing the site. These Argentinian readers were closely followed by Colombia (No 20), Mexico (No 25), and, Peru (No 26).
But, with the arrival of the Spanish-English interface that loaded last weekend, there has been a marked increase in the number of visitors to the site from Latin American countries as well as Spain. In addition to Mexico & Argentina, the top 30 yBENEDICT countries now include Spain, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Nicaragua, and Venezuela with these Spanish speaking countries making up almost 10 per cent of the total readership.
The June statistics show that Mexico is now ranked 6 in the top countries visiting the site followed by New Zealand (7), Canada (8) and Italy (9). Australia and the USA still hold the top 2 ranks amongst countries on YBENEDICT.
Stage 2: COMING TOMORROW!
The second and final stage of the YBENEDICT website will now be launched tomorrow at the 25 day mark leading up to WYD. The second stage of the site will include several additional aspects:
i) Our Top 25 SYDNEY PLACES;
ii) Our Top 25 AUSTRALIAN FACTS;
iii) Daily PILGRIM PROFILES on groups from across the world;
iv) YCATHOLIC: daily apologetics, catechetics and personal testimonies.
Stage 2 of the site will also be the occasion for the launch of the Italian Language Version.
The second stage of the site will be known as 'iBenedict' and will involve an extension of the news site to include WYD Information and WYD events.
"At 50 days we asked the question Y? Why is Benedict coming, why is WYD happening, why are hundreds of people coming to Sydney?" explained Mr McCarthy.
"And at 25 days our focus will shift towards providing essential information as to what's on, and where at WYD in Sydney. With YBenedict we asked the questions - but with IBenedict we will provide the answers. Stay tuned tomorrow to see what it all looks like."

Sydney builds WYD "mini-city"
World Youth Day
organisers are constructing what they describe as a "mini-city" in the
Barangaroo precinct in Sydney's East Darling Harbour.
Organisers are describing the new 22-hectare Barangaroo site at East Darling Harbour as a mini-city, ABC News reports.
The site will be the main venue for the six-day event, accommodating up to 140,000 people, with an altar two storeys high, stages, large screens and other facilities.
It is there that Pope Benedict will arrive by what organisers describe as a papal "boatacade" on Sydney Harbour to make his first public appearance on July 17.
But New South Wales Government's spokeswoman for the event, Kristina Keneally, says there will be fencing around the site and it will only be accessible with accreditation at times.
"Barangaroo at certain times will be a pilgrim-only venue for some of the major events but it will be a central gathering point for people throughout the week to come to youth festival events and be really the centre of things for World Youth Day," she said.
Young people who had registered for WYD would need to wear a "pilgrim pass" around their necks during some of the planned activities, she added.
"It is their ticket, if you will, for pilgrim-only events," Ms Keneally said.
Bishop Anthony Fisher said plans for the site - previously known as The Hungry Mile - were ambitious, but that building work was expected to be completed on time.
"Barangaroo will become a mini-city housing two main stages, 45 pilgrim areas, 1200 toilets, 25 catering outlets, 25 lighting towers, six large screens, a 300-seat media tribune with seven translation booths, VIP areas, merchandise facilities and a special needs area," he said.
A 17m-tall altar was being created especially for those events, Bishop Fisher said.
"The sanctuary will be 78m wide across, 20m wide at the front and 46m-deep, right there on the water, so the young people are going to see behind the Pope or the cardinals and bishops celebrating the mass, the beauty of Sydney Harbour as they are welcomed by us here."
"It's a spectacular location and it's one that I think is sure to impress all of our visitors."
Bishop Fisher also denied claims the Church's use of Hyde Park could be in jeopardy following its failure to pay a $150,000 bond for use of the site.
"The Church has paid $10 million to the State Government to secure for us all the public venues and I'm sure they will be secured for us. I'm quite confident that will happen," he said.
"It's a tiny part of the money that we've set aside for the public venues."

Giai đoạn trước tuổi Nghĩa Sĩ có 2 ngành, đó là ngành Ấu Nhi từ 6 tới 9 tuổi, và ngành Thiếu Nhi từ 10 tới 13 tuổi. Tiếp nối tuổi Nghĩa Sĩ là ngành Hiệp Sĩ Thánh Thể dành cho các bạn trẻ từ 18 tuổi trở lên.

Weekly Sunday Telegraph column: The Devil
Although
the devil is a regular feature in horror films, many Christians are not sure he
exists.
Whatever their sillier elements, these films all agree that the devil is a personal spirit of evil, not a mere symbol of it. When we say we believe (or do not believe) in the devil, we are talking about something different to the question of human evil.
Some individuals are spectacularly evil. Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot usually head the list. But evil cannot be completely explained by social conditioning, ignorance or ill-will. It is not something that goes away just because we think there is no such thing as evil.
Popular imagery is not always helpful. The traditional black demon with a tail and pitchfork seems more like a mischievous child than an agent of great evil. As often happens, the real story is considerably more interesting.
The Catholic Church teaches that the devil or Satan is a fallen angel. Like the other angels he was created as a spirit with intelligence and freedom, and used these gifts to make an irrevocable choice against God and for the supremacy of his own will over the divine plan.
Christian tradition also teaches that the devil is preternatural rather than supernatural. He is beyond human nature, but not a force above and beyond the laws of nature. He is not all-powerful, cannot predict the future, and has no capacity for love or compassion. He can only hate and works to make us share his hatred, especially for God, humanity, the people around us, and ourselves.
Belief in the devil is not confined to religious conservatives. Fr Bernard Haring was a famous Catholic moral theologian, quite liberal, and a public opponent of Pope John Paul II. But he had also served on the Eastern Front in World War Two, where millions of soldiers and civilians on both sides were slaughtered. Haring’s experience of this war convinced him of the existence of the devil, of the spirit of evil.
Another level of mystery is found in claims that people are possessed by evil spirits. Such examples are rare in our society, and I have always been sceptical about such claims; but I do not deny their possibility.
Psychological problems often provide much of the explanation in most of these cases, but occasionally the facts cannot be explained by any known cause.
The devil is also a tempter. Modern advertising has trivialised the idea of temptation, but everyone who has been confronted with the temptation to do something seriously wrong knows its power.
Jesus himself was tempted, first with things of the flesh, then with the promises of the world, and finally with the pride which undid Satan. Jesus was able to see the devil off in no uncertain terms. We can too, although it is harder for us.

Catholic boy in UK refuses Cub Scout pledge of allegiance to Queen
Glasgow - An eight-year-old Catholic boy cannot be a Cub Scout in Britain because he refuses to pledge allegiance to the Queen of the United Kingdom on religious grounds.
Matthew McVeigh, who lives near Glasgow, refused to recite the Cub Scout Promise because it requires swearing allegiance to the Queen. He was told he cannot become a full Cub Scout as a result, the Daily Mail reports.
“It's not fair. I don't want to say a promise that I don't believe in. I really enjoy the Cubs and don't want to feel left out or different from everybody else,” Matthew said.
Matthew’s mother, Tracy Anne McVeigh, said her son’s refusal to recite the part of the oath promising “to do my duty to the Queen” was a matter of principle. She said she was especially irked that other nationalities living in Britain can change the wording of the promise to accommodate their requirements.
“The 1701 Act of Settlement specifically discriminates against Catholics and only allows for Protestants to take the throne - so why should we make an oath to the monarchy?”
According to Cub Scout Association spokesman Chris Foster, people of other nationalities residing in the United Kingdom may change the section regarding the Queen to pledge their duty “to the country in which I am now living.”
“However, British subjects must promise to do their duty to the Queen,” Foster said. “She is the head of state.”
Scout Association rules also allow for the word “God” in the promise to be replaced with other deities according to people’s religion, but the guidelines are strict for the section regarding the Queen.
Matthew’s mother said the boy has been going to Cub Scouts since January and was preparing to become a full fledged member.
“He was really excited about it,” she said. “But when he had to fill out the application form, he realized he would have to pledge duty to the Queen.
“We weren't happy as we don't think it's necessary in today's world. We are supposed to live in a multicultural age but this just flies in the face of that.”
She said she expected Cub Scout leaders to allow a change of wording.
“I was gobsmacked that the Cub Scout commissioner said that if Matthew didn't say the Promise then he would effectively be out the door,” she said, according to the Daily Mail.
“He said he could still go along to trips but he would not be insured. As he can't wear the necktie, that sets him apart from his friends and I think that on trips it would be a safety issue too.
“I am not asking for special treatment. I would just like him to be a Scout without compromising on what he believes in,” she said.

Vatican, Vietnam agree to discuss restoring diplomatic ties
Hanoi,
- The Vatican and the Vietnamese government have agreed to establish a joint
working commission to discuss the possibility of restoring formal diplomatic
relations.
The proposal for a joint commission was approved during the visit by a Vatican delegation led by Msgr. Pietro Parolin, who met with Vietnamese government officials earlier this week. The visit was the 15th such trip by Vatican envoys to conduct informal talks with political leaders in Hanoi.
Although there were no formal statements released after the meeting between Vatican and Vietnamese representatives, the official Vietnamese news agency has confirmed plans for a working commission to move toward formal diplomatic ties.
In their informal negotiations with Hanoi, representatives of the Holy See have pushed for government recognition of the religious freedom of Vietnamese Catholics. The talks have yielded a few concessions from the Communist regime, allowing for the appointment of several new bishops and an easing of restrictions on the country's Catholic seminaries.
This year's talks between Church and government representatives also touched upon a series of tense disputes between Catholic activists and local government officials over the control of properties seized by the government from Church ownership.

Xt3 seeks "faithbook" friends

Cardinal George Pell yesterday launched a new Catholic social networking site,
xt3, with the title referring to Christ in the 3rd millennium.
The Daily Telegraph reports the site which is based on the models of Facebook and MySpace, aims to connect young people ahead of next month's World Youth Day in Sydney.
For Cardinal Pell, whose personal page on the site was designed by a WYD employee, the move would ensure that young Catholics without the means to travel to Sydney for the event would be able to experience it in real time.
"Whatever my ignorance of this area, it's more than balanced by my recognition of its importance and my determination that the Church and representatives would be active in this area," he said.
About 100 volunteers worldwide will monitor the site, ensuring it operates on a 24 hour basis.
WYD coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher said technology was expected to play an important role in the five day festival, with 225,000 pilgrims set to receive a daily text message from Pope Benedict XVI.
He said he hoped the site would entice others to learn more about the faith, even if they were not Catholic.
"All sorts of young people will come in and out of this site . . . they won't necessarily be Catholics or high octane Catholics," he said.
"Xt3.com is a legacy for World Youth Day, for the Church and a new page - and can I say a new web page - in the progress of the Gospel," he said.
"We want kids to feel free to talk freely. If they want to debate different issues, they'll be able to do that. There wouldn't be any point in stopping that from happening because if we did, they wouldn't keep visiting the site in the future.
" Events management student Jessica Langrell, 18, already has a profile on xt3.com and has been part of a trial of the site in previous months.
Describing herself as a "hardcore Catholic", she said it had allowed her to connect with others who were similarly minded.
"It's an easy way for people to get more involved or even just to find out more about it," she said.
Meanwhile, the Gold Coast Bulletin reports that Surfers Paradise parish priest Father Dan Ryan will be one of the few priests to remain on the Coast as Catholics flock to the celebrations, which are expected to attract up to one million people.
Thousands of parishioners are being educated on how to prepare for a 'Sunday celebration without a priest', earmarked for July 20.
Father Ryan told parishioners in a weekly newsletter that, at this stage, he would be the only priest in the parish on World Youth Day.

Sydney: the world's 10th best city
Sydney
is a little less liveable than last year, but it is still better than Melbourne,
which in turn is better than Perth, which is way better than Adelaide.
That sounds about right, but then this year's Worldwide Quality of Living Index reckons Adelaide is better than Brisbane, allegedly the least liveable of Australia's big-five capitals. Brisbane worse than Adelaide? Yes - and the gap is widening.
The index, compiled by Mercer, a human resources consulting company, ranks 215 big cities on 39 criteria including crime, pollution, education, restaurants, climate and transport.
Mercer sells its services to companies transferring its employees to various cities, and says anyone going to a city that scores badly (below 90 on an index where the base, New York City, scores 100, in 49th place) expects to be paid a premium.
The index has Sydney as the tenth-most liveable city, down from ninth last year, on 106.3. But it falls behind Auckland (fifth) and just ahead of windy Wellington (12th), a funky upstart that trounces Melbourne (17th) and the other three Australian cities. Zurich is on top, then Geneva and Vienna.
Adelaide, in 29th place, is five spots above Brisbane; last year, it was two places higher. The difference, says the index's briefing note, is that Adelaide was noted for its medical treatment, restaurants, opera and the arts, while Brisbane had entertainment and mild winters.
In comparison, France's cosmopolitan Paris is ranked at 32nd, while the top-rated United States cities are Hawaii's Honolulu at 28th followed by California's San Francisco at 29th. Hong Kong (70th), Beijing (116) and Jakarta (146) are well down the list.
Mercer spokesman Rob Knox said the annual survey was used by international companies and governments as they set pay rates for expat workers.
"The fact that Australian cities enjoy among the best standards of living in the world reinforces the attractiveness of Australia for workers and for multinational organisations," Mr Knox said in a statement.
"Our major cities continue to tick all of the boxes [with] established infrastructure and transport facilities, quality housing close to the city, a wide selection of restaurants and other amenities, as well as a good education and environment."
The global survey relies on data collected over three months to November the previous year, and last-minute monitoring is also made.
Mercer also today released the results of a similar survey ranking the safety of 215 cities across the globe.
Luxembourg came in at No.1, while Sydney, Melbourne and Perth were tied on 29th, and Adelaide and Brisbane tied on 49th.
Mercer also found the "city with the world's lowest quality of living and lowest levels of personal safety" is Baghdad. The war-torn Iraqi capital sits on the bottom of both lists

WYD united behind colours of Benedict
"Recognisably Australian"
red, orange, yellow and blue banners will adorn Sydney for World Youth Day and
Pope Benedict's visit, Cardinal George Pell has announced.
The Daily Telegraph reports the colours which are reminiscent of the Australian Outback, but Sydney Harbour and the Southern Cross will be the "principal decorations" of this year's World Youth Day.
The Pope's Master for Liturgical Ceremonies, Monsignor Guido Marini, joined Cardinal George Pell and WYD08 coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher to announce the designs behind this year's festival.
Unveiling the vibrant red, orange, yellow and blue banners, fencing, billboards and flags, Cardinal Pell said the colours were "recognisably Australian".
The designs include 2,500 banners which will be hung around the city from the end of June.
Among the most spectacular installations will be two "sanctuaries", or sacred spaces surrounding altars built for the event.
Construction work on the first showpiece sanctuary at Barangaroo, near King St Wharf, will begin in the coming weeks, ahead of Pope Benedict's arrival on Sydney Harbour in July.
Workers will begin building the second one, at Randwick Racecourse, from June 15 and Bishop Fisher said it would be a large structure, measuring 60m wide and 73m deep.
It will be covered by a 22 metre tall roof and will feature a giant cross and a painting of Marjorie's Bird, depicting the Holy Spirit, by Tiwi Islander artist Marjorie Liddy.
The image will also feature on vestments worn by priests at the event, while Bishop Fisher said he had every confidence Pope Benedict would don "a more elaborate version" when he celebrated Mass on July 20. The event is expected to be up to 500,000.
Bishop Fisher said WYD08 organisers had thought carefully about the messages behind the colours and designs for the festival.
"The colours of red, orange and yellow flowing throughout symbolise the Holy Trinity and the flames of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost," he said.
"They also bring to mind the colours the Australian Outback. The blue represents the waters of baptism, the sea of humanity and Mary full of grace.
"They also represent the oceans that surround Australia, and the magnificent Sydney Harbour, the location of this great event."
Meanwhile, a WYD media release announces that approximately 25 million items have already been ordered. These will be used to serve breakfast at more than 400 accommodation venues, lunch at 250 catechesis sites and evening meals in the central city.
Over 900,000 hot evening meals, prepared by Easyfood in Victoria, will be served throughout the week at major city locations including Barangaroo, Hyde Park, Domain, Darling Harbour and the Sydney Opera House Forecourt.
In total, 3.5 million meals will be served during the entire event, said Director of Pilgrim Services, Geoff Morris. The ABC reports that World Youth Day organisers say they are confident of reaching their targeted number of international visitors, even though visa figures show they are 73,000 people short.

V́ Thầy Giêsu luôn mời gọi: “ Tất cả những ai đang vất vả mang gánh nặng nề, hăy đến cùng Ta. . . Hăy học với Ta, v́ Ta có ḷng hiền hậu và khiêm nhường” ( Mt. 12, 28-29).
Cứ sau mỗi dịp gặp gỡ này, các em Thiếu Nhi lại như được lớn thêm lên trong ân sủng của Chúa, của Giáo Hội, và của các bạn bè trong Phong Trào ở các giáo xứ khác. Nhờ đó, ngày càng biết sống đẹp, có ích cho ḿnh và cho mọi người.
Và như thế, các bài học mang tính nhân bản này lại tiếp tục được thực hành và nhân rộng trong mọi mối tương quan, cách riêng với các bạn bè cùng lứa tuổi thiếu nhi.
Sau khi cùng mừng bổn mạng với các em Thiếu Nhi, th́ ngày 17.6.2008 tới đây, 1.200 Huynh Trưởng, đại diện cho 1.500 Huynh Trưởng trong Giáo Phận sẽ tham dự Ngày Họp Mặt HIỆP NHẤT IV tổ chức tại Phan Thiết, với chủ đề: TRAU DỒI ĐỨC TIN KITÔ GIÁO.
Xin T́nh Yêu Chúa tiếp tục sưởi ấm những ơn gọi Huynh Trưởng (GLV) và các Thiếu Nhi.

Thiếu Nhi hạt Thủ Đức, giáo phận Sài G̣n, cắm trại hè.
Thủ Đức – Khi những
tiếng ve ngân vang rộn ràng báo hiệu mùa hè đă về, các bạn trẻ sinh viên, học
sinh lại có những ngày hè nghỉ ngơi sau một năm học miệt mài với đèn sách. Hôm
nay Thứ Bảy 07.06.2008 vừa qua, Ban Mục Vụ Giới Trẻ Hạt Thủ Đức phối hợp với Ban
Mục Vụ Thiếu Nhi của Hạt đă tổ chức một ngày trại hè 2008 cho Thiếu Nhi của 12
Giáo Xứ trong Hạt Thủ Đức thuộc Giáo Phận Sài G̣n, với các Giáo Xứ: B́nh Chiểu,
B́nh Thọ, Châu B́nh, Fatima B́nh Triệu, Hiển Linh, Khiết Tâm, Thánh Nguyễn Duy
Khang, Tam Hà, Tam Hải, Thủ Đức, Từ Đức, Xuân Hiệp.
V́ đây là lần đầu tiên tổ chức, nên Ban Tổ chức chỉ giới hạn mỗi Giáo Xứ với 30 thiếu nhi từ 10 đến 14 tuổi và 3 Anh Chị Giáo Lư Viên, riêng các Giáo Xứ Hiển Linh, B́nh Thọ, B́nh Chiểu và Xuân Hiệp chỉ có đại diện 20 người. Tổng số thành viên Ban Tổ Chức và các em Thiếu Nhi lên tới 380 người. Ngày trại được tổ chức tại khuôn viên trụ sở Tỉnh Ḍng Salêdiêng Don Bosco Xuân Hiệp – Thủ Đức. Ngay từ sáng sớm với niềm vui rạng rỡ trên khuôn mặt, các em thiếu nhi đă hiện diện đông đảo tại khuôn viên của ngày trại. Ngay sau khi tập trung, các em đă được các Anh Chị Giáo Lư Viên điểm danh và căn dặn những nội quy của ngày trại, tiếp đến là phần ôn lại bài hát chủ đề và những bài hát sinh hoạt chung. Được biết chủ đề của ngày trại năm nay thật ư nghĩa: “Nhờ Mẹ Maria, em đến với Thầy Giêsu”.
Sau khi điểm danh và ổn định, cha Fx. Trần Văn Cường, chánh xứ Xuân Hiệp, đă đại diện Cha Bề Trên Giám Tỉnh Ḍng Don Bosco và Cha Giám Đốc Cộng Thể Học Viện Thần Học Philip Rinaldi nơi tổ chức ngày trại, có đôi lời chào đón Quư Cha, Quư Thầy, Quư Sơ và các Anh Chị Giáo Lư Viên trong Ban Tổ chức cùng các em Thiếu Nhi của Hạt Thủ Đức đă chọn địa điểm Trụ Sở Nhà Ḍng để tổ chức ngày trại. Với tinh thần yêu thương và phục vụ giới trẻ, Cộng Đoàn Học Viện Philip Rinaldi đă sẵn sàng đón tiếp và tích cực hỗ trợ cho ngày trại này.
Sau vài lời phát biểu, cha Fx. Trần Văn Cường đă kêu gọi mọi người và các em Thiếu Nhi tham dự cùng cất lên kinh Lạy Cha và 3 kinh Kính Mừng dâng kính Đức Mẹ để khai mạc ngày trại, và ngài cũng đă ban Phép Lành cho tất cả mọi người cùng cầu chúc mọi người có một ngày trại thật vui tươi và bổ ích. Tiếp đến, đội múa lân rất hoành tráng của Giáo Xứ Thánh Nguyễn Duy Khang đă biểu diễn bài múa lân để khai mạc ngày trại hè 2008 Thiếu Nhi Hạt Thủ Đức.
Sau đó, các Em thiếu
nhi được hướng dẫn về các lều trại của Giáo Xứ ḿnh để trang trí cho lều trại.
Từ 9giờ đến 11giờ 15 tất cả các em đă cùng tham dự tṛ chơi “Rung Chuông Vàng”
theo tài liệu học hỏi về Đức Trinh Nữ Maria, nhằm khích lệ và cổ vơ nơi các em
ḷng yêu mến Đức Mẹ nhiều hơn. Sau cuộc thi “Rung Chuông Vàng”, th́ từ 11giờ 30
đến 12giờ 45, các em đă theo từng đội để dùng cơm trưa. Mỗi thành viên cùng các
em thiếu nhi đă nhận được những phần ăn trưa rồi trở về lêu trại của ḿnh để
cùng chia sẻ với nhau những món ăn ngon miệng và vui tươi trong t́nh huynh đệ –
yêu thương đoàn kết.
Sau giờ cơm trưa, các em đă có khoảng 20 phút để nghỉ ngơi đôi chút nhằm chuẩn bị cho giờ sinh hoạt vào buổi chiều. Từ 13giờ đến 14giờ 30 tất cả các em đă tập họp trong hành lang trước sân khấu của Học Viện Rinaldi để tham dự phần văn nghệ, mỗi Giáo Xứ đều đóng góp 1 tiết mục văn nghệ ngắn gọn.
Bằng những bài ca và những hoạt cảnh chủ đề ca ngợi và cổ vơ ḷng sùng kính Đức Mẹ Maria, các em thật vui tươi, năng động và phấn khởi trong giờ văn nghệ này. Sau giờ văn nghệ các em đă có hơn một tiếng đồng hồ với những tṛ chơi vận động tại sân bóng của Học Viện.
Trước khi kết thúc ngày trại các em đă có 30 phút tham dự giờ Chầu Thánh Thể tại Nguyện Đường của Giáo Xứ Xuân Hiệp để tạ ơn Chúa và Mẹ Maria sau một ngày sinh hoạt vui chơi trong ơn nghĩa Chúa và trong t́nh huynh đệ ỵêu thương.
Sau giờ Chầu Thánh Thể các em nhổ trại và tập trung tại sân chơi nhà đa năng để tham dự phần Phát Thưởng Thi đua và bế mạc ngày trại hè 2008. Một em đă diện tất cả các Bạn Thiếu Nhi của Hạt Thủ Đức ngỏ lời cám ơn Quư Cha, Quư Thầy, Quư Sơ và Các Anh Chị trong Ban Tổ Chức của Hạt, đồng thời cũng cám ơn Cộng Đoàn Don Bosco Xuân Hiệp đă tạo điều kiện thuận lợi cho các em trong ngày hội trại thật vui tươi và bổ ích
Cuối cùng, lúc 17giờ 30 chiều, các em đă cùng nhau hát vang “Bài Ca chia tay và Lên Đường” mang theo nơi ḿnh những tâm t́nh và niềm vui của ngày trại hè 2008. Các em đă trở về giáo xứ của ḿnh với quyết tâm sống thật tốt như những Thiếu Nhi ngoan hiền của Chúa Giêsu và Mẹ Maria theo gương Thánh Trẻ Đaminh Savio: “Bạn của tôi là Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể và Mẹ Maria”.

Người trẻ Công Giáo Việt Nam trên đường làm chứng nhân tại Đại Hội Giới Trẻ Thế Giới 2008, Sydney - Úc Châu.
“Lạy Chúa chúng con về từ bốn phương trời, lạy Chúa chúng con về từ khắp thôn làng…” tiếng hát nhịp nhàng được ḥa vang của các huynh trưởng Thiếu nhi Thánh Thể miền Tây Bắc Hoa Kỳ trong ngày gây quỹ cho Đại hội Giới Trẻ Thế Thế giới tại Úc châu. Họ đă hát vang và chuyền một ngọn lửa đang cháy sáng cho hơn 400 quan khách hiện diện để cảm ơn sự khuyến khích họ là sẽ lên đường tham dự Đại hội Giới trẻ Thế Thế giới 2008. Những người trẻ đă lắng nghe và đáp lại lời mời gọi của Đức Thánh Cha Benêdictô XVI tại thánh lễ bế mạc tại Đại Hội Giới Trẻ Thế giới tại Đức quốc, mùa hè 2005.
Lời mời gọi và hẹn gặp tại Đại hội Giới Trẻ Thế giới, Sydney-Úc Châu mùa hè 2008 của người cha già kính yêu. Đáp lại lời mời gọi ấy, người trẻ trong Cộng đồng Công giáo Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ đă miệt mài chuẩn bị một cuộc “Hành Tŕnh tràn Niềm Tin và Hy Vọng”, họ tin rằng sức sống ngọn lửa Thánh Linh sẽ khơi dậy nung đốt ngọn lửa đức Tin và đức Mến trong tâm khảm của họ. Khoảng cách từ Hoa Kỳ đến Úc Châu hơn nửa ṿng địa cầu và kinh phí cho cuộc “Hành Tŕnh Niềm Tin và Hy Vọng” này rất tốn kém. Chi phí của cuộc hành tŕnh là điều khiến tất cả những trưởng nhóm lo lắng và ngại ngùng. Một vài địa phận tại Hoa Kỳ không t́m được nguồn tài trợ để tổ chức cho người trẻ trong địa phận của họ Nhiều địa phận không dám tổ chức và nhiều người đă bỏ cuộc nhưng hứa đồng hành trong lời cầu nguyện.
Nhưng với tâm t́nh và suy tư của các bậc phụ
huynh, các huynh trưởng TNTT và các linh mục-tuyên úy của các cộng đồng, các
nhóm trẻ xa gần. Làm sao nuôi ngọn Lửa và thật sự đáp lời mời gọi của Đức Thánh
Cha. Từ miền Nam Cali - những người Sinh Viên Công Giáo Việt Nam đă âm thầm
chuẩn bị cho chuyến đi này. Cha Bill Cao và chị Dương Hồng sẽ đưa 14 người trẻ
trên đường đi Úc châu; sẽ ghé qua Việt Nam thăm một vài thánh địa; cùng tham gia
với Bút Nhóm Lửa Việt trong những chuyến công tác từ thiện tại Cần Thơ, Đà Lạt
và Hàm Tân... Mỗi thành viên trong phái đoàn cũng sẽ đóng góp thêm một ngân
khoản là $50 cho những chương tŕnh từ thiện tại quê hương. Tổng số tiền chi phí
cho những nhóm sẽ ghé Việt Nam và Úc hay chỉ đi Úc châu thôi, từ $3,550 đến
$5,187.
Cũng tại miền Nam Cali này, Đức Giám mục Mai Thanh Lương sẽ cùng những người trẻ Hoa Kỳ trong địa phận Orange trên đường đi Úc Châu ghé qua Việt Nam. Lên đến miền thung lũng San Jose, chúng ta sẽ thấy một đạo quân hơn 100 người trẻ Lasan, do Frere An Phong hướng dẫn, họ sẽ đi xuôi đồng bằng sông Cửu Long. Họ sẽ vượt dăy Trường Sơn và lên tận miền Sapa. Người trẻ Lasan sẽ thăm viếng, hoà đồng với người người nghèo và người dân tộc trong suốt cuộc hành tŕnh trước khi đến đến Úc Châu.
Mang tiếng Sleeping Seattle, nhưng trong những ngày tháng
qua - các huynh trưởng Thiếu nhi Thánh Thể của miền Tây Bắc và những anh chị em
trong nhóm Vietnamese Young Aldult Group (http://wydseattle.org)
đă mời gọi và hy sinh thật nhiều để nhiều người trẻ tham. Thật là một sự ngưỡng
mộ và cảm phục đến quư linh mục quản nhiệm, tuyên úy, phụ huynh và những người
trẻ của miền Tây Bắc, với 27 huynh trưởng TNTT và 37 anh chị em trong VYAG sẽ có
mặt ở đất Đại hội.
Tại thành phố hoa hồng, Portland-Oregon, 10 bạn trẻ của Nhóm Trẻ Chúa Ba Ngôi thuộc Giáo Xứ Đức Mẹ La Vang, do Linh mục Hải Đăng, SDD và nữ tu Thanh Nga, MTG hướng dẫn. Sau những cố gắng gây quỹ cho chương tŕnh đi tham dự WYD 2008 và chương tŕnh “Hello-Bonjour Vietnam” nhằm giúp các bạn trẻ Việt Nam sinh trưởng ở Hoa Kỳ có dịp về Việt Nam chia sẻ t́nh yêu thương với những người kém may mắn, đồng thời t́m hiểu về văn hóa và nguồn gốc của ḿnh. Các bạn trẻ đă được sự ủng hộ nhiệt t́nh của Đức Ông Chánh Xứ Giacôbê Phạm Văn Ninh, Cha Hoàng Phúc, CSsR và quư vị ân nhân, sẽ cất bước lên đường ḥa nhịp với bạn trẻ bốn phương tiến về Đại Hội Giới Trẻ Thế Giới, và sau đó sẽ trở lại Việt Nam để xây nhà giúp người nghèo ở những vùng xa xôi hẻo lánh.
Rời miền Tây Bắc chúng ta sẽ nghe tiếng nhạc lời ca của những bạn trẻ mang tên là Jam Fest Ministries (www.jamfestministries.com). Tiếng hát và tinh thần của họ làm thành phố Houston, TX nóng hơn nhiều; cha Nguyễn Lăm và 20 bạn trẻ của JFM sẽ có mặt World Youth Day và niềm hănh diện hơn cho người trẻ Việt Nam – JFM trong ngày 18 tháng 7, sẽ vang tiếng hát để giúp người trẻ lắng nghe và bước vào cuộc hành tŕnh của Chúa Giêsu những Chặng Đàng Thánh Giá tại St Peters Surry Hills. Thêm vào đó các nữ tu ḍng Đaminh sẽ cùng hát vang với JFM và đồng hành với giới trẻ Việt Nam.
Các linh mục linh hướng của Nhóm Trẻ 117 như: Đồng Minh Quang, Trần Công Danh,SDB; Nguyễn Hoài Chương,SDB; Vũ Hải Đăng,SDD đă cố gắng, đă ḥ hét, kêu gọi và động viên người trẻ “Lên đường về nhà Chúa đi”. Vâng giá máy bay rất đắt nhưng cuộc hành tŕnh rất giá trị. Trên đoạn đường về Úc Châu, 25 người trẻ từ Hoa Kỳ sẽ về Việt Nam để được đồng hành với 30 sinh viên Việt Nam đă nhận học bổng Dấn Thân Nguyễn Văn Thuận của Bút Nhóm Lửa Việt, họ sẽ tham gia những “Ngày T́nh Thương” tại Cần Thơ, Vĩnh Long, Tiền Giang, Đơn Dương, Lâm Đồng, Hàm Tân, Tam Kỳ và Đà Nẵng với các em cô nhi, các em bệnh Sida trong những ngày công tác y tế tại Việt Nam. Đầu tháng 7 các linh mục Nguyễn Truyền, Ngô Thông CssR, Minh Quang, và các nữ tu ḍng Đaminh, Ḍng Salesian Sister, Tu Hội Tận Hiến sẽ đồng hành với gần 80 anh chị em trẻ từ Hoa Kỳ đi Úc châu. Cũng không quên những anh em như Thầy Al Vũ của Ḍng Salesian Don Bosco sẽ hướng dẫn các học sinh và tu sĩ Salesian lên đường. Linh Mục Phạm Tuấn sẽ tháp tùng với Đức Giám Mục Todd Brown ghé Việt Nam trên đường đi Úc Châu.
"Chúng con sẽ lănh nhận sức mạnh của Chúa Thánh Thần xuống trên chúng con, và chúng con sẽ là chứng nhân của Thầy" (CV 1:8). Một niềm hănh diện cho Cộng đồng Công giáo Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ nói riêng, khi nhiều nơi đang lơ đăng hay không tin tưởng điều có thể làm được. Th́ người trẻ trong Cộng đồng chúng ta sẽ có mặt cùng với trăm ngàn người trẻ thế giới: với sự hiện diện của gần 250 bầu nhiệt huyết; gồm có 1 giám mục; 12 linh mục; 8 nữ tu, 2 sư huynh, 40 huynh trưởng Thiếu nhi Thánh Thể và gần 200 sinh viên và người trẻ từ nhiều tiểu bang. Với những hy sinh của riêng họ và gia đ́nh. Cùng với sự chăm sóc và cố gắng của những tuyên úy và bậc phụ huynh; tất cả sẽ quỳ xuống giữa đất Đại Hội Giới Trẻ Thế Giới để nhận lănh ơn Chúa Thánh Thần và hát vang: “Hành trang con mang theo mọi khát vọng t́m chân lư. Hành trang con mang theo mọi xây dựng t́m công bằng. Về đây xin dâng Cha trong lo âu. Đưa hai tay quyết chung xây thế giới mới. "

Đại hội Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể hạt Hàm Tân, Phan Thiết
PHAN THIẾT – Cùng với
các Hạt trong Giáo Phận, ngày 1 tháng 6 vừa qua, hơn 1500 Thiếu nhi Huynh trưởng
khắp 25 đơn vị Xứ đoàn Hạt hàm tân tựu về Giáo xứ Tân Lư dự ngày Đại Hội mừng lễ
bổn mạng (Ḿnh Máu Thánh Chúa). 1 tháng 6 cũng là ngày Tết nhi đồng thế giới và
bắt đầu cho kỳ nghỉ hè của các em học sinh, nên việc tổ chức có tính qui mô hơn
mọi năm.
Các sự chuẩn bị đă từ hơn 2 tháng trước, rất biết ơn Cha xứ, HĐMV, quí Mẹ công giáo, Gia trưởng và và những tấm ḷng nhiệt thành của nhiều anh em thuộc Giáo xứ Tân lư, nhóm khánh tiết xứ Thanh Xuân. Từ trong Nhà thờ đến ngoài sân băi, mọi khâu tiêm tất và chu đáo. Projector thay cho giấy hát. Sân khấu, băng rôn, cờ giăng rực rỡ.
Từ 7giờ 30 các xứ đoàn đă có mặt đông đủ, diễu hành quanh nhà thờ dưới tiếng nhạc, trống hoành tráng. Cha Hạt Trưởng Phêrô Phạm Tiến Hành cùng nhiều khách mời thuộc cấp hạt long trọng khai mạc Đại Hội.
Sau Thánh Lễ đồng tế, Cha đặc trách TNTT Giáo phận có bài nói chuyện tâm t́nh với các em.
13giờ các em hồ hởi học tập qua các phần thi đua giữa bốn cụm: Giáo lư, Kinh Thánh, Phong trào, đặc biệt là Thư mục vụ HĐGM Việt Nam về năm giáo dục. Dù rất mệt nhọc bởi các lễ lớn liên tục, nhưng Đức Cha Giáo phận ưu ái đến thăm Đại hội. Ngài say mê suốt 20 phút huấn từ cho các em. Ngài dạy thếu nhi hăy t́m Chúa Giêsu trong Thánh Thể và nơi người nghèo.
Sau một giờ sinh hoạt chung ngoài trời, tất cả bước vào giờ thánh thật trang
nghiêm. Cha chính xứ Phêrô Nguyễn Huy Hồng chủ toạ giờ chầu - cung nghinh rước
kiệu Thánh Thể quanh nhà thờ trên chiếc xe hoa rực hoa màu. Hai đội trống trên
60 em của hai xứ Tân Lư và B́nh An hoà tấu nhảy múa, xen lẫn những bài ca khen
t́nh yêu Thiên Chúa và các đoạn suy niệm Thánh Thể, làm cho cuộc rước thêm sốt
sắng và sống động. Thật ấn tượng cảnh hơn 1500 thiếu nhi quỳ gối trước sân nhà
thờ cùng chiêm bái và nhận phép lành Ḿnh Thánh Chúa.
Sau điểm tâm chiều, cả sân băi đầy ắp người cùng thưởng thức một chương tŕnh văn nghệ chọn lọc góp về từ các cụm xứ, nghe liên tục những tràng pháo tay ủng hộ và khích lệ.
\Cao điểm của ngày Đại Hội, mọi người với nến sáng trong tay, hướng về nến Phục Sinh trên sân khấu. Trong cảnh bóng tối phủ vây, họ cùng tấu lên những bài ca: Giêsu ánh sáng, nổi lửa lên. ., và hăy thắp sáng... Nh́n một rừng đèn sáng trên những đôi tay nhỏ bé, gói bao quyết tâm nối lửa cho đời. Nh́n một thế hệ trẻ bay cao vươn rộng, ngập tràn ánh hy vọng về những ngày mai.

Pope's bodyguard checks us out

GIANI is not a name well known in Sydney but his face is familiar to
Vatican-watchers as the official who handles security arrangements and
accompanies the Pope at public appearances in Rome and abroad.
As the chief protector of Pope Benedict XVI, he is usually the person jogging alongside a moving popemobile.
Unlike his predecessor, who apprehended the man who shot Pope John Paul II, Dr Giani has never lived his worst nightmare: an assassination attempt.
He is in Sydney for five days to inspect venues including Randwick Racecourse, Darling Harbour East, The Domain, St Mary's Cathedral, the Mary MacKillop Place museum, Government House and Admiralty House, to try to ensure that World Youth Day will not be marred by protest or violence.
But Dr Giani does not grant interviews. After conducting several site surveys yesterday he issued a short statement expressing his "sincere gratitude" for the work of the World Youth Day organisers, NSW and federal police. After a photo call with Dr Giani yesterday, questions about the Pope's security were taken by Danny Casey, World Youth Day's chief operating officer.
Asked if pilgrims would be able to touch the Pope, Mr Casey said there would be opportunities to get close to the Pope since, unlike most well-protected visiting heads of state, the Pope was a priest.
Would his security staff be bearing weapons? Mr Casey declined to comment.
One of the biggest challenges, he said, would be managing the throngs of Catholics expected to flock to see the Pope on his first visit to Australia. The Vatican and police had also discussed the possibility of some kind of comedy stunt, he disclosed. World Youth Day organisers also announced at least 36 extra flights scheduled for next month, including four additional Qantas flights from Los Angeles and Europe and a charter flight.
"Our information is that almost every flight into Sydney is fully booked in the lead-up to the event and 36 more flights have had to be added so far," Mr Casey said.
As of this week, 39,000 special visas have been granted for pilgrims and 13,000 are pending. The church says it is on track for 125,000 international visitors. Many would collect their visas as they left their country of origin.

mà Giáo Phận đă đề ra cách đây ba năm, hay mừng các em nhân ngày Quốc Tế Thiếu
Nhi, mà c̣n nhằm tạo điều kiện cho các em có cơ hội gặp gỡ nhau, liên đới với
nhau trong tinh thần của cộng đồng Kitô hữu trong Giáo Phận, chia sẻ với nhau,
hiệp thông với nhau, cùng nhau đưa ra những quyết tâm sống đạo, học hỏi giáo lư,
tôn sùng và yêu mến Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể.
Theo chương tŕnh, đúng 8 giờ sáng, các em thiếu nhi và các Giáo Lư Viên từ các
nẻo đường của Giáo Phận đă tề tựu đông đủ trong Nhà thờ Chính ṭa Thái B́nh. Ước
lượng có khoảng 1200 em. Các em đến đây với tinh thần hết sức hồ hởi, vui tươi,
tựa như được về với nhà cha chung. Tôi thật cảm động và thầm thương mến khi nh́n
thấy các em đang tung tăng “zui zẻ” tiến vào nhà Chúa để làm một việc đầy ư
nghĩa, đặc biệt ư nghĩa và hữu ích cho đời sống tâm linh của các em. Hẳn Chúa sẽ
mỉm cười và thầm chúc lành cho các em. Sau đó, 8 giờ đến 9 giờ, các em được tập
hát, sinh hoạt, giới thiệu các cha phụ trách Mục Vụ Giáo Lư Giáo Phận (cha
Đaminh Đặng Văn Cầu, đặc trách; cha Giuse Đinh Xuân Ngọc và cha Gioa Kim Đặng
Văn Hội, phó đặc trách. 9 giờ đến 9 giờ 30’, các em được một cha Ḍng Chúa Cứu
Thế chia sẻ về Bí Tích Thánh Thể. 9 giờ 30’ đến 10 giờ, Đức cha P.X. Sang đă gặp
gỡ các em. Ngài đă nhắn nhủ các em cố gắng đi xa hơn, chạy nhanh hơn, bay cao
hơn trong đời sống đạo, trong đời sống tâm linh bằng “4 cỗ xe”: yêu mến Chúa
Giêsu Thánh Thể, năng học hỏi Kinh Thánh và Giáo Lư, yêu mến Đức Mẹ La Vang Thái
B́nh và không ngừng làm việc bác ái xă hội. Trước mặt vị chủ chăn, cha chung của
các em, các em đă hô to quyết tâm của ḿnh để thực hiện các việc ấy. Chẳng biết
các em làm được đến đâu nhưng đó là tấm ḷng đơn thành của các em! Chúa sẽ đón
nhận tất cả. Sau đó các em đă chầu Thánh Thể một giờ. Chà! Chương tŕnh “nặng kư”
đấy nhưng các em vẫn sốt sắng như thường! Trong giờ chầu, những lời hát cộng
đồng của các em thật du dương thánh thót, những lời nguyện tha thiết được các em
thốt lên thật đơn sơ chân thành. Các em cầu nguyện cho bản thân, cho các bạn,
cho cha mẹ, cho quê hương, cho Giáo Hội… Cảm động thay!
Sau giờ chầu chung, các em dùng cơm trưa chung với nhau. Các em ăn cơm hộp, tốp
đứng, tốp lang thang, tốp ở bờ ao, tốp dưới chân tượng đài Đức Mẹ La Vang,…
trông thật dễ thương. Thương hơn nữa, khi vừa ăn trưa xong th́ trời mưa tầm tă
khiến các em thiếu chỗ nghỉ, thiếu chỗ chơi, bèn kiếm pḥng nào trống “chui” vô
vậy! Tội nghiệp. Thế nhưng các em vẫn cứ vui tươi, tốp nghỉ, tốp nô đùa chả sao!
Đúng 1 giờ 30’ chiều, các em tập trung lại tại nhà thờ để sinh hoạt và thi Giáo
Lư đến 3 giờ. Phần thi Giáo Lư thật vui tươi và hào hứng. Các em trong các Hạt
đă có sự chuẩn bị, giờ đây là cơ hội trổ tài. Kết quả Hạt… nhất… nh́ … ba.
Sau đó, các em cùng nhau tham dự Thánh lễ Tạ Ơn do Đức Giám Mục Giáo Phận chủ sự
cùng với các cha phụ trách đồng tế. Thánh lễ cũng là chóp đỉnh của đời sống đạo
của các em. Các em đă tham dự cách tích cực và sốt sắng. Thánh lễ đă kết thúc
trong niềm hân hoan vui sướng, được tỏ lộ trên các khuôn mặt “trẻ thơ măng sữa”,
non nớt, đơn thành.
Ngày Đại Hội hôm nay đă để lại trong ḷng các em những ấn tượng sâu đậm, khó
quên. Rồi đây các em sẽ trở về lại với cuộc sống thường ngày của các em, mang
theo những “hành trang tâm linh” để chia sẻ cho bạn bè muôn phương. Hẳn các em
sẽ mạnh hơn, vững hơn và không ngừng tiến xa hơn trong cuộc sống của các em. Ước
mong các nhà trọng trách trong Giáo Phận và Giáo Hội toàn cầu không ngừng chăm
lo cho các em thiếu nhi. Bởi lẽ các em là tương lai của Xă Hội và đặc biệt là
tương lai của Giáo Hội. Nguyện xin Chúa Kitô luôn ôm ấp các em vào ḷng và không
ngừng chúc phúc cho các em.

Full papal itinerary for World Youth Day released

The Holy See’s Press Office has released the full itinerary for Pope Benedict
XVI’s trip to World Youth Day, which will take place July 15-20. He will arrive
at the Richmond Royal Australian Air Force Base at 9:15 a.m local time on
Sunday, July 13, after which he will spend three days resting in private.
On 17 July Pope Benedict will begin his World Youth Day activities by celebrating a Mass in private. He will then meet with several officials of the Australian government, including Governor-General of Australia, Major General Michael Jeffery; Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd; New South Wales Governor Marie Bashir; and New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma.
Following a brief display of traditional Aboriginal dances and songs, he will then board the ship "Sydney 2000" for his official welcome to Sydney at 2:45 in the afternoon.
On July 18, the Holy Father will again begin the day with a private Mass after which, at 10:30 a.m., he is due to participate in an ecumenical meeting in the crypt of St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney before going on to meet with representatives of other religions in the cathedral chapter.
Also on Friday, the Pope will have lunch with a group of young people and then following lunch he will proceed to the square in front of St. Mary’s Cathedral where he will begin the Way of the Cross with a prayer.
At 6:45 p.m. he will also meet a group of disadvantaged young people at the Sacred Heart church of Notre Dame University.
At 9:30 a.m. on Saturday July19, Benedict XVI will celebrate Mass in St. Mary's Cathedral with Australian bishops, seminarians and novices, and consecrate the building's new altar. Having had lunch with the bishops, that evening he will travel to the Randwick Racecourse to preside at a prayer vigil with young people.
Sunday will see the Holy Father arriving at the Randwick Racecourse in a helicopter to preside over Mass for 23rd World Youth Day and to recite the Angelus at noon. At 6 p.m. on the same day, he will deliver an address to the benefactors and organizers of World Youth Day in the chapter house of St. Mary's Cathedral.
The final day of the Pope’s itinerary will begin with a private Mass, followed by a trip to The Domain in Sydney where he will meet with the 23rd World Youth Day volunteers and bid farewell to the youth. He will then go directly to Sydney's international airport, where he will be greeted by the authorities before departing by plane for Darwin. After a brief stopover, his flight will proceed to Rome where the Holy Father is due to arrive at around 11 p.m.
“His Holiness has a very full schedule on his first visit to Australia,” said Bishop Anthony Fisher OP, Coordinator of World Youth Day. “He has requested specific meetings in order to connect with the full range of Australian youth and the youth of the world. “
“As a Head of State, he will also be conducting several official meetings with civic leaders,” he said.

cha chánh xứ Louis Phạm Hữu Độ, cha phó Micae Phạm Ngọc Trác, đoàn giúp Lễ, cùng
với 33 em Rước Chúa lần đầu của giáo xứ Chúa Kitô Vua từ từ tiến lên cung thánh

Thánh Lễ của các em, cho các em, và do các em đọc sách, đọc lời nguyện, dâng của
lễ … diễn ra thật sốt sắng và trang nghiêm theo tâm t́nh của Cha chủ tế dẫn nhập
Lễ: “Thánh Thể là trung tâm của đời sống đức tin và mọi hoạt động Kitô giáo”.
Tâm t́nh xuyên suốt Thánh lễ là ḷng sùng kính và yêu mến Thánh Thể, cũng như
tâm t́nh biết ơn Chúa v́ thương yêu nhân loại đă xuống thế làm người và trao ban
chính Ḿnh Máu Người để làm lương thực nuôi sống chúng con trong cuộc lữ hành
trần thế.
Được sự chăm sóc tận t́nh của hai cô Nguyễn Thanh Thủy và cô Nguyễn Thị Mỹ Duyên
trong suốt năm học lớp 3 vừa qua, các em như những bông hoa tươi thắm kính dâng
lên Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể. Các em được học biết và yêu mến Chúa, đồng thời cũng
được chỉ bảo phải sống sao nên người con ngoan của Chúa và giữ tâm hồn các em
luôn xứng đáng là đền thờ cho Chúa ngự trị: “Ở là ở cùng con, xin Chúa ở là ở
cùng con…”.
Lạy Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể - nguồn mạch sự sống, xin cho giây phút kỳ diệu Chúa
tan biến trong các em lần đầu tiên này, luôn là một kỷ niệm đẹp khó phai, để mai
sau dù có vấp ngă trên đường đời, các em sẽ nhớ lại giây phút gặp gỡ đầu tiên
khó quên này, để rồi biết chỗi dậy xin Ngài tha thứ và tiếp tục cuộc hành tŕnh
đức tin cho đến ngày gặp lại Đức Giêsu Kitô, Đấng mà các em yêu mến và tôn thờ.

Đại hội Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể hạt Đức Tánh, Phan Thiết

THIẾT -- Hàng năm, Giáo Phận Phan Thiết tổ chức Đại Hội Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể cho
5 giáo hạt vào dịp lễ Mính Máu Thánh Chúa, bổn mạng Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể. Năm
nay,có 7.200 em, đại diện cho thiếu nhi các giáo xứ cùng với 700 Huynh trưởng
tham dự đại hội tại 5 giáo hạt vào ngày Chúa nhật lễ kính Ḿnh Máu Thánh Chúa.
Giáo hạt Đức Tánh có 1.600 em và 200 Huynh trưởng từ 19 giáo xứ giáo họ tề tựu
về Nhà thờ Vơ Đắt cùng sinh hoạt, gặp gỡ giao lưu trong t́nh thân ái vui tươi
hiệp nhất.Từ những xứ xa xôi hơn 50km, các em lên đường từ 4 giờ sáng cho kịp
giờ khai mạc.
Đoàn thiếu nhi và huynh trưởng đón chào Cha tân hạt trưởng, GB Trần Văn Thuyết
đến dự nghi thức khai mạc. Ngài về nhận giáo xứ Vơ đắt và Hạt trưởng hạt Đức
tánh, thay cho Cha FX phạm Quyền về nhà thờ Chính toà, nhận Hạt trưởng hạt Phan
thiết.
Trong lời huấn từ, cha tân Hạt trưởng rất vui mừng bên đoàn thiếu nhi. Ngài đă
khuyên các thiếu nhi hăy yêu mến Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể bằng việc siêng năng tham
dự thánh lễ, viếng Chúa mỗi ngày.
Các cha trong giáo hạt đă đến đồng tế Thánh lễ với cha Hạt trưởng, làm tăng thêm
ḷng yêu mến Chúa, yêu mến Giáo hội nơi các em thiếu nhi. Cha FX Nguyễn Quang
Minh, Tổng Tuyên Uư Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể của Giáo phận đă chia sẽ lời
chúa với các em.Đây cũng là dịp để các thiếu nhi thấy và biết thêm về các cha
trong giáo hạt. Ban chiều, các em thi kể chuyện Thánh kinh và giao lưu văn nghệ.
Sau đó kiệu Thánh Thể và Chầu tạ ơn.

Nh́n những thiếu nhi hồn nhiên trong sáng vui hát reo ḥ, tôi nhớ đến Thánh Don
Bosco, một thiên tài giáo dục. Những lời khuyên của cha Don Bosco với thiếu nhi
với tuổi trẻ thật bổ ích. “Người ta gieo ǵ th́ gặt nấy”. Hỡi các con, hăy cho
cha biết những người nông dân đang rất sung sướng gặt những bông lúa của họ,
nhưng nếu họ đă không cày bừa, gieo hạt rồi nhặt cỏ xấu, th́ liệu họ có thể nhận
được niềm vui gặt hái lúc này hay không? Chắc chắn là không, phải không các con…bởi
v́ để đựoc gặt trước tiên phải gieo hạt. Với các con cũng thế, nếu bây giờ các
con gieo, một ngày kia các con ciũng sẽ hài ḷng về mùa gặt của ḿnh. Nhưng nếu
các con lơ là công việc của người giống này, khi mùa gặt đến các con sẽ chết đói.
Vậy các con hăy nhớ đến điều Chúa nhân lành đă phán: “Người ta gặt điều mà người
ta đă gieo”. Gieo lúa th́ gặt lúa, gieo bắp th́ gặt bắp, gieo lúa mạch th́ gặt
lúa mạch; nhưng gieo gai góc th́ gặt gai góc. Các con có muốn mùa gặt của các
con tốt đẹp không? Hăy gieo xuống đất hạt giống tốt! Và các con hăy nhớ kỹ rằng:
nỗi mệt nhọc phải chịu trong thời gian gieo hạt th́ không là ǵ sánh với niềm
vui mà mùa gặt mang lại.
C̣n một điều nữa, để hạt giống tốt và cho một bông lúa mẩy, th́ phải gieo hạt
đúng thời hạn;lúa vào mùa thu, bắp vào mùa xuân…Hạt giống nào cũng thế. Ai gieo
không đúng hạn th́ không gặt đựoc ǵ hết. Và này, cha hỏi các con: đời người
đựoc gieo vào mùa nào? Mùa xuân, trong thời kỳ non trẻ. Nều không gieo vào mùa
này, th́ sau này không gặt hái được ǵ. Và nếu cha hỏi các con phải gieo ǵ? Tất
cả các con sẽ trả lời cha: “Những việc tốt lành”. Quả thật, người nào gieo hạt
gai thỉ chỉ gặt đựoc gai nhọn trong tuổi già. Các con có hiểu những điều ấy
không? Đừng quên nhé!
Cha muốn nhắc các con một lời phán dạy khác của Chúa nữa: “ai gieo gió th́ gặt
băo”. Gió đây là những đam mê xấu. Một chú bé để cho các đam mê cai trị ḿnh, để
cho biết bao những hạt giống xấu lọt vào tâm hồn ḿnh, tuy lúc này nhỏ bé nhưng
dần dần chúng sẽ lớn lên. Một ngày kia những cơn băo kinh khủng sẽ nổi lên trong
người ấy, và người ấy sẽ bị quỵ ngă ngay. Nhờ ơn Chúa, các con đừng để những hạt
giống bé nhỏ ăn rễ trong các con;cuộc sống các con sau đó sẽ là một chuỗi bất
hạnh! Hăy nhớ điều này: các đam mê điên khùng sẽ điều khiển người ta và làm cho
họ vi phạm những điều xấu, cả khi chúng không cưỡng ép họ. Thời gian đầu chúng
rất nhỏ bé, vụn vặt. Nhưng từng chút, từng chút chúng tự phát triển dần và đến
một ngày nào đó, họ không có thể làm chủ chúng. Điều đó cũng sẽ như thế đối với
các con.
Khi một đứa trẻ nào giữ lại những đam mê nhỏ trong ḿnh, thay v́ t́m cách khuất
phục chúng th́ nó lại nói: “Ồ! Không việc ǵ!”…Cha run sợ tự nhủ: đúng vậy, hôm
nay không việc ǵ hoặc không có sự ǵ đáng kể cả đối với một cụm cỏ mới mọc.
Nhưng các con cứ để nó to lên và rồi các con sẽ thấy. Sư tử con, c̣n nhỏ th́ rất
hiền, nhưng với nhữgn nămmtháng, nó trở thành một dă thú đáng sợ. con gấu nhỏ
thật dễ thương trong hang, về sau nó sẽ trỡ thành một con vật kinh khủng. con
cọp dường như muốn ve vuốt các con bằng chân của nó, sẽ trở thành hung dữ nhất
trong các con vật.
Các con có hiểu được tất cả những thí dụ đó không? Vậy nếu các con muốn sau này
hạnh phúc th́ ngay bây giờ các con hăy tỉnh thức và cẩn thận với chính ḿnh.
Mùa hè, các em xếp bút nghiên vui chơi tuổi thơ. Gia đ́nh và giáo xứ là môi
trường tốt nhất gieo hạt giống tốt vào mănh đất tâm hồn thiếu nhi.
Các Nhà thờ có đông hơn Thiếu Nhi dự lễ mỗi ngày. Các em siêng năng đến Nhà thờ
viếng Chúa, học giáo lư. Thiếu nhi thể hiện ḷng yêu mến Chúa trong cuộc sống
nơi gia đ́nh, làng xóm, với mọi người. Sống đẹp ḷng Chúa, các em xứng đáng là
Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể.

Eucharist should make us attentive to needs of the poor, Benedict XVI teaches

City, May 25, 2008 / 11:03 am (CNA).- Speaking to pilgrims about the feast of
Corpus Christi, Pope Benedict XVI said "the Eucharist reveals the true beauty of
Christianity" and is "the school of charity and solidarity that should make us
more attentive to the many people who struggle to procure their daily bread."
"One week ago our gaze was on the mystery of the Trinity; today we are invited
to fix our gaze on the holy Host: and thus on God, the same Love. This is the
beauty of true Christianity: The Creator and Lord of all things was made a grain
of wheat in order to be sown on our earth, in the furrows of our history. He was
made bread to be broken, shared, eaten; he was made our food to give us live,
his own divine life.”
Pope Benedict also pointed to the fact that Jesus was, “Born in Bethlehem, which
in Hebrew means ‘house of bread’.” From these origins, Jesus’ desire to feed his
followers became even more explicit in his preaching. He revealed to the people
that “the Father had sent him into the world as the ‘living bread descended from
heaven,’ as the ‘bread of life’.”
The Holy Father elaborated on this feast of the Eucharist, calling it "a
wonderful gift of Christ, who at the Last Supper wanted to leave us with this
memorial of Easter, the sacrament of his Body and Blood, a token of his immense
love for us."
The Eucharist, he said, is "the school of charity and solidarity. He who eats of
the bread of Christ cannot remain indifferent before those, who also in our day,
are deprived of their daily bread."
Addressing the problem of rising food costs and poor distribution, he said,
"Many parents can hardly procure enough food for themselves and their children.
It is a growing problem that the international community is making great efforts
to resolve. The Church not only prays ‘give us this day our daily bread,’ but
the example of the Lord who in so many ways ‘multiplies five loaves and two
fish’ with countless initiatives to promote humanity and sharing, so that no one
is lacking in what is necessary to live."
The Holy Father added that Christians are called to be attentive in concrete
ways to the many who go without food.
"Dear brothers and sisters, let this feast of Corpus Domini be an occasion to
grow in the in this concrete attention to our brothers, especially the poor."
"We obtain this grace from the Virgin Mary, from whom the Son of God took flesh
and blood, as we repeat in a celebrated Eucharistic hymn, set to music by the
one of the greatest composers, Ave verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine… Mary,
who brought forth from her womb Jesus, who was the ‘tabernacle’ of living,
imparts to us her own faith in the holy mystery of the Body and Blood of her
divine Son, since he is truly the center of our lives."
At the end of his address, the Pope invited all those present to join him in Rosary in St. Peters Square next Saturday evening.

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The logistics of bringing tens of thousands of young people
together for World Youth Day are complicated, but this year's July 15-20 event
in Sydney, Australia, has the added hurdle of the major expense for pilgrims
just to get there.
This is especially true for U.S. pilgrims, who are about 9,000 miles away and
face airline tickets ranging from $2,000 to $5,000.
Tickets also have been hard to come by because of the limited number of carriers
with flights from the United States to Australia -- namely, Qantas and United
Airlines.
Pat Pacer, a youth ministry coordinator with the Chicago Archdiocese, said the
trip's expense, coupled with a lack of flexibility to purchase more tickets,
brought attendance numbers down considerably for their group.
The Chicago Archdiocese sent 2,000 pilgrims to World Youth Day in Toronto in
2002. Three years later it sent 500 youths to World Youth Day in Cologne,
Germany. This year it is sending 43 pilgrims.
Pacer told Catholic News Service May 16 that he fields calls almost daily from
people who suddenly want to go to World Youth Day. Unfortunately, he said, he
cannot accommodate them because the group tickets purchased months ago at a
discounted rate of $2,100 are no longer available.
In fact, those tickets were not available one week after the initial purchase.
Even the more expensive tickets the group purchased later at $3,000 each are
also long gone. One group that purchased last-minute tickets, in May, was
charged $5,100 per ticket.
A group of 75 pilgrims from the Diocese of Colorado Springs, Colo., had its
share of travel frustrations nearly a year before the actual event.
The group made a deposit on the trip last summer based on airfare prices quoted
to pilgrims through a Colorado organization called Catholics for Pilgrimages. In
September, United Airlines informed the tour group its itinerary had been
canceled. The group was told another itinerary was available, but the price tag
would be twice the initial amount.
In an effort to curb costs, the group altered its trip, purchasing airline
tickets that will take participants to Australia via Seoul, South Korea, where
members plan to spend two days visiting Catholic sites prior to World Youth Day.
Other groups similarly purchased airline tickets through Asia for a cheaper
rate.
A group from the Diocese of Madison, Wis., is traveling through Tokyo and a
group from the Diocese of Rockville Centre, N.Y., is spending a few days in
Singapore. Some groups had to split up and travel on different airlines to save
money.
A Qantas representative told CNS the majority of direct flights from the United
States and Australia were through Los Angeles, which is a 20-hour flight. The
airline added one flight from the United States for World Youth Day.
A group of students from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, also
had to amend its initial flight plans when told last August by a Qantas
representative that tickets the students had reserved in 2006 were no longer
available.
The group, which had planned its itinerary well in advance, had to scramble to
get new tickets at a higher price. The students also changed their initial plan
for staying in New Zealand prior to World Youth Day to going there after the
event.
"To be informed we no longer had seats was quite a shock," Franciscan Father
Dave Pivonka, the pilgrims' spiritual director, wrote to group members last
fall. But he added that "with so many blessings that will come from this trip,
there are bound to be some bumps along the way."
Salesian Sister Maryann Schaefer, who is leading a group of 66 pilgrims from the
Salesian Youth Movement to World Youth Day, knows all too well about bumps along
the way.
In fact, she uses somewhat stronger words, calling the exorbitant ticket costs
and other logistical frustrations with registering for the event both "utterly
ridiculous" and "horrendous."
Sister Shaefer, director of admissions for Mary Help of Christians School in
North Haledon, N.J., has chaperoned pilgrims to seven World Youth Days, so she
knows a thing or two about lining up group registrations and transportation.
She began planning for the Sydney trip in 2006 and tried, unsuccessfully, to
book airline tickets well in advance. When the group was finally able to
purchase tickets, the fares were more costly than anticipated.
And when the group added two tickets a week later for two more members, each of
them cost more than $1,500 above what the other tickets cost, she told CNS May
23.
Sister Schaefer had to ask pilgrims for extra money. When other fees increased
for their registration package, she turned to parishioners for financial
support.
"The church works with the poor; we're not the rich," she said.
Now the group is focused on what the World Youth Day experience is about.
"Forget about everything else," she said. "We're going to find the Lord."
Because of the expenses involved, the 2008 crowd might be a little older than
the crowd at previous World Youth Day gatherings.
Mary Jansen, director of the Office of Young Adult Ministry in the San Francisco
Archdiocese, which is taking 50 pilgrims, said the group was not involved in
fundraising efforts, primarily because those heading to Sydney are working
adults and they plan to pay for the trip as if it were their summer vacation.
The World Youth Day Web site -- www.wyd2008.org -- offers possible fundraising
ideas such as bake sales, parish dinners, car washes and raffles.
High school students who are parishioners of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish in
Bridgewater, N.J., followed the site's suggestions and then some. They sponsored
family night at a local restaurant, a holiday tree sale, a Mother's Day flower
sale, a basket raffle, a bake sale and a pancake breakfast.
Father Joseph G. Celano, pastor, said he wasn't surprised at how well the parish
rallied to support the youths because the parish benefits from what the pilgrims
bring back with them.
"Their excitement is contagious," he said "It spreads to all those privileged
enough to work directly with these young people and then on to the whole parish.
It reawakens our faith and raises our spirits."

VATICAN ngày 22, tháng 5, 2008 – Đức Giáo Hoàng Benedict XVI nói Thánh Thể đem lại cho lịch sử một cuộc cách mạng sâu xa nhất.
Đức Giáo Hoàng xác nhận như thế hôm nay trong bài giảng của Lễ Ḿnh Máu Thánh Chúa Kitô tại Vương Cung Thánh Đường Thánh Gioan Lateranô. Sau thánh lễ, ngài hướng dẫn một cuộc rước kiệu Thánh Thể qua đường phố Rôma để đến Vương Cung Thánh Đường Đức Bà Cả.
Ngài xác nhận là Thánh Thể đă mang lại một cuộc cải cách xă hội, v́ các tín hữu tụ tập trước Thánh Thể, bỏ lại đàng sau mọi sự dị biệt về tấp lớp xă hội, quan điểm chính trị, phái tính và ngay cả những khuynh hướng khác nhau.
Những thính giả của ngài là nhân chứng sống động của lời ngài: Cử tọa gồm các nhà Truyền Giáo Bác Ái, hướng đạo viên, các Hồng Y, các Kỵ Sĩ của Mộ Thánh, các người hành hương từ trên khắp thế giới, và ngay cả một số người vô gia cư ṭ ṃ đến xem.
Suy ngẫm về mầu nhiệm Thánh Thể, Đức Giáo Hoàng dẫn chứng Thánh Phaolô: “Không c̣n là Do Thái hay Hy Lạp, không c̣n là nô lệ hay người tự do, không c̣n là người nam hay nữ; v́ tất cả anh chị em chỉ là một trong Đức Giêsu Kitô."
Sự Thật và Sức Mạnh
Đức Giáo Hoàng nói, "Qua những lời này, chúng ta thấy được sự thật và sức mạnh của cuộc cách mạng Kitô giáo, một cuộc cải cách sâu xa nhất trong lịch sử nhân loại, được cảm nhận chính nơi những ai tụ tập quanh Thánh Thể. Ở đó, có tụ họp mọi người đủ mọi lớp tuổi, phái tính, t́nh trạng xă hội và quan điểm chính trị."
Ngài tiếp, "Thánh Thể không bao giờ có thể là một biến cố riêng tư, chỉ dành cho một số người được lựa chọn trên căn bản trực thuộc hay bạn bè. Thánh Thể là một sự thờ phượng công cộng không có h́nh thức chuyên biệt”
"Chúng ta không quyết định sẽ tụ họp với ai; chúng ta đă đến và t́m được nhau qua đức tin và được mời gọi để trở nên một thân thể, cùng chia sẻ tấm bánh duy nhất là Chúa Kitô."
"Chúng ta được kết hiệp bất kể những dị biệt về quốc gia, nghề nghiệp, đẳng cấp xă hội, quan điểm chính trị: Chúng ta cởi mở cho nhau để trở nên một trong Chúa Kitô."
Đức Giáo Hoàng Benedict XVI xác nhận, "ngay từ lúc khởi đầu, đây chính là đặc tính của Kitô giáo, rơ ràng là được thể hiện quanh Thánh Thể. Và cần phải canh chừng để cho khỏi bị cám dỗ bởi tính chất cách biệt, dù không cố t́nh, cũng đừng đi theo nghịch lối."
Ngài kết luận, “Lễ Ḿnh Máu Thánh Chúa Kitô nhắc nhở chúng ta trên hết: là kitô hữu có nghĩa là cùng đến với nhau từ khắp mọi thành phần để hiện diện trước Chúa Kitô duy nhất và để trở nên một trong Người và với Người.”

Nhật ngày 18 tháng 5 năm 2008 là một trong những ngày đặc biệt nhất trong lịch
sử của Phong Trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể tại Sydney, Úc Châu. Ban Chấp Hành Liên
Đoàn tổ chức ngày lễ mừng Bổn Mạng Phong Trào TNTTVN, và cũng là ngày kỷ niệm 20
năm thành lập Liên Đoàn Nữ Vương Ḥa B́nh tại Sydney. Mặc dù những weather
forecasts đă báo rằng mấy ngày trước đó, Chúa Nhật này trời mưa, gió lạnh thổi
mạnh, cao nhất là16 độ Celcius trong ngày, nhưng các Huynh Trưởng vẫn đồng ḷng
cương quyết tổ chức ngày mừng Bổn Mạng như đă dự định. Có lẽ v́ các Trưởng thiếu
niềm tin vào Chúa v́ ngày mừng lễ Bổn Mạng năm vừa rồi 2007, đă bị “cancelled”
v́ cả tuần trước đó đă bị mưa ầm ỹ, nhưng rồi tới ngày mừng Bổn Mạng th́ trời
lại …. nắng tốt đẹp, nên lần này rút kinh nghiệm của năm trước, các Trưởng đă
thêm lời cầu nguyện và đặt niềm tin vào Chúa, và kỳ diệu thay, ngày mừng Bổn
Mạng năm nay Chúa Thánh Thể đă ban cho một ngày rất đẹp trời, thật lư tưởng cho
chương tŕnh sinh hoạt của Liên Đoàn đă được dự định trong ngày này.
Trước 9 giờ sáng, đại đa số các Huynh Trưởng và các em đoàn sinh đă có mặt tại Trung Tâm Tĩnh Huấn Thánh Giuse của Cộng Đồng Công Giáo Việt Nam tại vùng đất thơ mộng tên Bringelly. Với trên 500 đoàn sinh, trên 100 Huynh Trưởng của 7 Xứ Đoàn thuộc Liên Đoàn và rất đông quan khách và phụ huynh đến tham dự, đặc biệt năm nay lại có thêm sự hiện diện của Huynh Trưởng và các em Xứ Đoàn Phêrô-Phaolô vùng Wollongong cùng đến tham dự đă làm cho số Huynh Trưởng và đoàn sinh phá kỷ lục là con số tham dự đông đủ nhất từ trước tới nay.
Vào đúng 9:00 sáng, Huynh Trưởng và các em đă so hàng chuẩn bị xong, và cùng với Cha Tuyên Úy Đặc Trách Liên Đoàn, quư Sơ Trợ Úy, quư Quan khách và qúy Phu huynh đă nghiêm trang tham dự vào nghi thức chào cờ Úc, cờ Việt Nam Cộng Ḥa, cờ Liên Đoàn và các Xứ Đoàn. Sau đó Cha Tuyên Úy Đặc Trách Liên Đoàn Nguyễn Văn Tuyết đă chia sẻ câu chuyện dưới cờ và đồng thời long trọng tuyên bố khai mạc ngày lễ mừng Bổn Mạng Phong Trào. Sơ Trợ Úy Liên Đoàn, Đoàn Thị Phục cũng đă nhắc nhở Huynh Trưởng và đoàn sinh một số luật lệ cần biết để có một ngày sinh hoạt thật vui, trật tự và kỷ luật. Một số Huynh Trưởng thuộc xứ đoàn La Vang đă mở màn đầu tiên bằng biểu diễn múa lân rất điêu luyện đă làm sôi động bầu không khí trong lúc đó.
Các em đoàn sinh được chia nhóm theo các Ngành dưới sự hướng dẫn của các Ủy Viên Liên Đoàn để ăn sáng và phát phiếu để tham dự vào tṛ chơi của các gian hàng. Trong khi đó rất đông các Huynh Trưởng phụ trách đă có mặt tại gian hàng của ḿnh để sắp xếp các tṛ chơi, tŕnh bầy những giải thưởng...v.v. để đúng 10:00 giờ sẽ đón nhận các em đến chơi tại gian hàng của Xứ Đoàn ḿnh.
Các em nhỏ được ưu tiên ra chơi trước. 7 Xứ Đoàn có gian hàng tṛ chơi riêng của ḿnh, mỗi cái có đặc điểm riêng của nó. Liên Đoàn cũng đă mướn một cái jumping castle cho các em nhỏ nhảy. Sau khoảng 2 tiếng, những giải thưởng đă dần dần biến vào tay các em. Nhiều em ôm hai ba giải thưởng, nhiều em đoạt được giải nhỏ, nhiều em được sơn mặt facepaint, hay xịt tóc nhiều màu ... nhưng đặc biệt nhất là tất cả các em đều rất vui với những tiếng cười thật rộn ră.
Sau khi những tṛ chơi đă kết thúc, Huynh Trưởng đă mau chóng dọn dẹp những gian hàng, lượm rác trên sân cỏ, và chuẩn bị tham dự Thánh Lễ. Trong khi Sơ Trợ Úy Vũ Lành Hải và một số Huynh Trưởng ôn lại cho các em cách thức cung nghinh Phúc Âm, đọc các bài đọc và lời nguyện giáo dân, th́ ở trong nhà bếp cũng khá nhộn nhịp, có một số Trưởng, phụ huynh, cựu Huynh Trưởng và ân nhân đang nhịp nhàng chuẩn bị cho bữa ăn trưa sau Thánh lễ.
Trong khi mọi người đang lo chuẩn bị cho Thánh Lễ và bữa ăn trưa, ngoài những phụ huynh, giảng viên giáo lư và cựu Huynh Trưởng đă tới từ sáng, lại có nhiều qúy vị quan khách thuộc Ban Thường Vụ, Ban Mục Vụ các giáo đoàn, các Phong Trào Đoàn Thể trong Cộng Đồng, Ban Tổ Chức WYD4VN, cựu Huynh Trưởng, qúy vị ân nhân, giảng viên giáo lư ...v.v. đă tới để cùng dự Thánh Lễ mừng Kỷ Niệm 20 năm Thành Lập Liên Đoàn.
V́ qúa đông người nên hội trường Chúa Chiên Lành đầy chật. Các em ngồi ở dưới đất ở phía trước, qúy vị quan khách ngồi trên ghế ở phía sau và 2 cánh gà của hội trường. Thánh Lễ đă do Cha Tuyết chủ tế cùng với quư Cha, Cha Liêm và Cha Huy đồng tế. Thánh lễ diễn ra rất long trọng và trang nghiêm. V́ năm nay cũng là năm mà Đại Hội Giới Trẻ Thế Giới sẽ đến Sydney, để hiệp thông và cầu nguyện cho Đại Hội được thành công tốt đẹp, 2 Huynh Trưởng đă hát lại bài chủ đề của Đại Hội “Hăy Lănh Nhận Thần Lực”. Thánh lễ được kết thúc bằng đôi phút chầu Thánh Thể để cảm tạ Chúa cho những hồng ân Chúa đă ban cho Phong Trào qua Liên Đoàn trong 20 năm qua.
Sau Thánh Lễ là giờ ăn trưa. Huynh Trưởng xếp hai bàn dài trong nhà bếp để phân phối thịt nướng, hot dog, ḿ xào, rau xà lách... v.v cho các em. Sau khi phân phối xong, Huynh Trưởng ăn cho nhanh, rồi lại đứng lên dọn dẹp và chuẩn bị qua phần kế tiếp là chương tŕnh văn nghệ.
Một lần nữa các em, các Trưởng, và quư quan khách vào hội trường Chúa Giêsu Chiên Lành để cùng xem văn nghệ. Tiết mục đầu tiên là một bài hợp ca do các Trưởng trong Ban Quản Trị các Xứ Đoàn hát, có tựa đề "Hai Mươi Năm Hành Tŕnh" cho Cha Paul Chu Văn Chi sáng tác. Kế theo là kịch câm của Xứ Đoàn Kitô Vua đă mang đến nhiều tiếng cười. Các em thuộc Xứ Đoàn Hiển Linh ra điệu múa dịu dàng với áo dài khăn đống. Xứ Đoàn Fatima nhắc nhở mọi người lấy Chúa Giêsu làm idol của ḿnh, c̣n Xứ Đoàn Simon Ḥa diễn ra một cuộc chiến đấu giữa Chúa Giêsu và Satan. Xứ Đoàn La Vang diễn vở kịch hai vợ chồng và các em Nghĩa Sĩ thuộc Xứ Đoàn Giuse Tuấn hát liên khúc một số bài tiếng Anh. Xứ Đoàn Giuse Cảnh múa điệu hip hop, tượng trưng cho sự phát triển của các em Thiếu Nhi từ Tuổi Thơ lớn lên thành Huynh Trưởng và cuối cùng Xứ Đoàn Phêrô-Phaolô đă ra tṛ chơi làm những động tác để cho các em đoán và tặng quà cho các em đoán trúng.
Chương tŕnh văn nghệ đă kết thúc một ngày sinh hoạt vui chơi cho các em. Các Huynh Trưởng phụ trách lo dọn dẹp, hút bụi, cleanup những khu sinh hoạt. Một số Huynh Trưởng khác phát cho các em áo sinh hoạt, đặc biệt để kỷ niệm 20 Năm thành lập Liên Đoàn. Huynh Trưởng, quư Quan khách, quư phụ huynh cũng đă nhận được cuốn Đặc san, ghi chép lại lịch sử và những điểm son đă thành đạt được của 8 Xứ Đoàn và Liên Đoàn. Sau nghi thức hạ cờ, Cha Nguyễn Văn Tuyết tuyên bố kết thúc ngày mừng Bổn Mạng Phong Trào.
Một ngày mừng Bổn Mạng đă hoàn tất một cách thành công tốt đẹp và đáng khen ngợi. Anh Liên Đoàn Trưởng Nguyễn Ngọc Khiêm trong Thánh Lễ đă đại diên cho Huynh Trưởng và các em trong Liên Đoàn nói lên lời hân hoan chào đón quư Cha, quư Sơ, quư Ân nhân, quư Quan khách, quư Phụ huynh, anh chị cựu Huynh Trưởng đă đến tham dự chung với Liên Đoàn trong ngày hôm nay. Anh đă gửi lời cám ơn đến mọi người và xin hăy tiếp tục thương yêu nâng đỡ và thêm lời cầu nguyện cho Liên Đoàn sẽ măi được thăng tiến tốt đẹp trong những chặng đường kế tiếp.

A US Catholic
high school principal has sued Facebook after pranksters set up a fake profile
for him on the popular social networking website.
Portalit reports that Dean Tim Puntarelli of Roncalli High School in Indianopolis after Facebook refused to reveal details needed to identify the perpetrators.
Dean Puntarelli claimed the profile was a case of harassment and identity theft.
Marion Superior Court Judge Robyn Moberly agreed. She ruled that the plaintiff must be given the data so that he (along with the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, responsible for running the high school) could take the legal battle against the creators of the profile.
"The archdiocese hopes to resolve the issue as quickly as possible in order to restore damage done to Puntarelli's reputation and to prevent this type of identity theft from happening again," reads a statement sent by the archdiocese.
The scandal began one month ago, when Facebook first received a complaint from Puntarelli about the bogus profile, which had been used to send inappropriate "pictures and messages" to students.

Vatican Authentic praying of the Rosary brings healing, counsels

Vatican City, May 5, 2008 / 10:30 am (CNA).- On Saturday, the Holy Father presided at the praying of the Rosary in the Roman Basilica of St. Mary Major. He noted that when one prays the Marian prayer authentically, it brings peace and reconciliation.
Pope Benedict reflected on his experiences with the Rosary especially during May, the month of Mary. He recalled how evenings in May “evoke pleasant memories” of paying “homage to the Virgin Mary.” He also noted that “the holy Rosary is not some pious practice relegated to the past, a prayer of distant times to be thought of nostalgically. Indeed, the Rosary is experiencing what is almost a new springtime.”
The Rosary is especially needed today, because it “helps us to place Christ at the center, as did the Virgin who meditated upon everything that was said about her Son and upon what He Himself did and said. When we recite the Rosary we relive important monuments of the history of salvation, we again go over the various stages of Christ's mission. With Mary we turn our hearts to the mystery of Jesus."
The Holy Father called on the Blessed Mother to help us “welcome within ourselves the grace that emanates from these mysteries, so that through us this grace can 'irrigate' society, starting with our everyday relationships, purifying it from many negative forces and opening it to the novelty of God.” The Pontiff added that the Marian prayer can bring healing to the world. "The Rosary, when it is prayed in an authentic manner - not mechanically and superficially, but profoundly - brings peace and reconciliation. It contains the healing power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, invoked with faith and love at the heart of each Hail Mary."
Benedict XVI then called on those present to ensure they remained united to Mary during these days leading up to Pentecost, "invoking a renewed effusion of the Holy Spirit for the Church." In conclusion, he also entrusted them with "the most urgent intentions" of his ministry: "the needs of the Church, the great problems of humanity, peace in the world, the unity of Christians, and dialogue between cultures", as well as the pastoral objectives of the diocese of Rome.

Save us from temptation - and email, bishops pray
Wollongong Bishop Peter Ingham features
in a YouTube video to promote an Australian bishops' pastoral letter warning on
the opportunities and dangers of using the internet.
The nation's bishops employed traditional and 21st century communication techniques to give guidance to Catholics about the internet by sending a pastoral letter to every church in Australia, and posting video on YouTube, The Age reports.
The four minute video features the benign face and white hair of Wollongong Bishop Peter Ingham, flanked by a teenage girl with a laptop and a young boy, warning about unwelcome websites, stranger danger, cyber bullying and financial exploitation.
Bishop Ingham demonstrates how widespread the internet has become with a story of a three year old girl learning the Lord's Prayer.
She had it word perfect until the end: "Lead us not into temptation and send us some email," the girl recited (rather than "save us from evil").
Bishop Ingham, the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference delegate on media issues, said the church had to take its internet safety message into cyberspace to reach young people.
"If only a few people see this video message and think over the points raised, it will be most worthwhile."
The pastoral letter is for parents, grandparents and teachers.
Young people's "reality has been formed by the internet and the mobile phone in ways that many of us from previous generations are still trying to understand. Together with the mobile phone, the internet has transformed the way that conversations are held, friendships are maintained, entertainment is sought and information is gained," the letter says.
"Much of this change has been immeasurably for the better. But parents, educators, church leaders, psychologists and others are increasingly concerned about internet dangers, while the generational and technological divide often means parents feel out of their depth, it says.
"Children should not have computers in their rooms, parents should install net filters and, above all, they should educate their children about the dangers and how to make "correct and informed" decisions and build trust".

Buổi tĩnh tâm và Lửa Thiêng được tổ chức tại Trung Tâm Tĩnh Huấn của Cộng Đồng, theo tinh thần ‘trở về nguồn’ dành cho những sinh hoạt trong năm nay.
Chương tŕnh bắt đầu vào lúc 5 giờ chiều thứ Bảy 19 tháng 04, 2008. Những huynh trưởng, dự trưởng, và cũng có một số em nghĩa sĩ, dần dần tới nơi và cùng sinh hoạt vui vẻ với nhau. Từ lúc 6 giờ 30 có mùi gà kho bốc lên từ nhà bếp, làm mọi người hùng hổ, nhào vô nhà bếp giúp một tay xếp chén dĩa, nhưng bữa ăn tối, theo chương tŕnh, vào lúc 7 giờ, cho nên mọi người trở lại ra ngoài, tiếp tục sinh hoạt cho đến 7 giờ.
Tiếng chuông báo động cho mọi người biết ‘dinner is ready’. Bữa cơm với thịt gà kho, trứng chiên và canh, do một số vị ân nhân nấu, đă cho mọi người một bữa ăn no và ngon. Sau đó là giờ sinh hoạt chung với sự giúp đỡ của Sơ Hải, một vài huynh trưởng diễn kịch ngắn cho huynh trưởng đoán là Thánh nào.
Tiếp theo là giờ tĩnh tâm của Sơ Hải. Sơ cho mọi người thấy một h́nh jigsaw puzzle đă được ghép lại, nhưng lại thiếu hai miếng. Sơ giải thích mỗi trưởng là như một miếng. Chúa cho chúng ta có vị trí của ḿnh. Nếu ai muốn vô vị trí người khác th́ cái h́nh không thể hoàn tất. Nhiều người làm đúng bổn phận ḿnh sẽ xây dựng một Liên Đoàn vững chắc và hoàn hảo. Sau lời khuyên của Sơ là giờ chầu Thánh Thể. Mọi người thinh lặng khi Ḿnh Thánh Chúa được đặt trước mặt mọi người. Sơ đưa cho các Trưởng chuyền Ḿnh Thánh Chúa, và mỗi người ra một lời cầu nguyện. Có người cầu cho xứ đoàn, cầu cho huynh trưởng, cầu cho chính ḿnh. Có lời cảm tạ Chúa, lời cầu cho b́nh an. C̣n có vài người xúc động, rơi những giọt lệ trong âm thầm.
Sau giờ tĩnh tâm là giờ nghỉ ngơi. Ai coi phim th́ coi, ai ăn cháo hay ḿ gói th́ ăn, ai chơi bài th́ chơi, c̣n ai đi ngủ th́ cố gắng bịt tai đi ngủ.
Sáng sơm hôm sau mọi người ăn sáng rồi so hàng chào cờ. Có một số huynh trưởng không tiện tham gia buổi tĩnh tâm, nhưng đă đến tham dự Lửa Thiêng. Huynh Trưởng được chị Phúc tập một số bài hát, và sinh hoạt chung, với nhiều tṛ chơi rất là đơn sơ mà có thể làm mọi người cười ‘bể bụng’.
Rồi đến giờ Ủy Viên, các trưởng chia ra thành bốn nhóm, tùy theo những ngành mà ḿnh đang sinh hoạt, để huynh trưởng các xứ đoàn có cơ hội thảo luận về những sinh hoạt đă qua, và quyết định sẽ dạy những ǵ vào trong những tuần sắp tới.
Bữa ăn trưa có thịt gà, thịt ḅ nướng, sausage, rau sà lách, bánh ḿ … v.v. Trong lúc đang ăn, mỗi xứ đoàn cử ra một người đại diện xứ đoàn để viết ra một lời cầu nguyện giáo dân, và đọc trong Thánh Lễ. Trước giờ Lễ Cha Tuyết nói về đề tài: Thách đố về hệ thống Internet và đời sống Công Giáo và có đặt vài câu hỏi cho huynh trưởng suy nghĩ và trao đổi.
Sau đó Thánh Lễ đă kết thúc chương tŕnh Tĩnh Tâm và Lửa Thiêng 2. Sau khi chụp h́nh lưu niệm, tất cả cầm tay nhau và hát bài ca tạm biệt… “xa cách nhau ḿnh nhớ nhau hoài.”

Pope urges young people to banish evils of drugs, poverty, racism
YONKERS, N.Y. (CNS) -- Addressing a crowd of 25,000 young people and seminarians, Pope Benedict XVI spoke of the "monster" that cast a shadow over his own childhood and urged the current generation to banish the darkness that exists today. Speaking April 19 at a boisterous rally on the grounds of the Archdiocese of New York's seminary in Yonkers, the pope said that while young people now enjoy democracy's freedom "the power to destroy does, however, remain." Pope Benedict offered a personal reflection on his own youth in Germany, "marred by a sinister regime that thought it had all the answers." Nazism, he said, "banished God and thus became impervious to anything true and good." The pope was forced to enroll in Hitler Youth as a boy but soon stopped going to meetings. In 2006 he said at a youth meeting in St. Peter's Square that he decided to become a priest after witnessing the Nazis' brutality. At St. Joseph's Seminary, the pope said the evils of substance abuse, homelessness and poverty, racism, violence and the degradation of girls and women result in people being treated as objects and the denial of God-given human dignity.

Vietnamese authorities return shrine land
In an unexpected announcement yesterday,
local government of Quang Tri province stated that they would return most of the
land surrounding the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of La Vang, that was confiscated
by the communists in 1975.
During a meeting between Archbishop Stephen Nguyen Nhu The, bishop Francis Le Van Hong - archbishop and coadjutor bishop of the Archdiocese of Hue - and the local government of Quang Tri province on last Thursday April 10th, Nguyen Duc Chinh, vice chairman of the People Committee of Quang Tri stated that the government had decided to return to the Church an area of 21.18 hectares. The news has been confirmed by Bishop Francis Le Van Hong in an official letter to Vietnam Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The total area of 23.66 hectares surrounding the Basilica has been seized by the government after 1975. Nguyen Duc Chinh also stated that the other area of 2.48 hectares would remain State property. However, the Church may use the land for its activities.
The news has been received with mixed reactions. Some believe that the government wants to show their goodwill in the dialogue with the Church on the land issues. Others think the government now appreciates the potential of tourism benefits of the site once the Church regains its land to build tourist features. But most express their skepticism that this action means the government will keep its promise to return Hanoi nunciature.
On 1 February, Catholics in Hanoi agreed to stop protesting as the Vietnamese government promised it would return the former nunciature to the Archdiocese of Hanoi. But so far, no moves have been made. For many Catholic activists in Hanoi, the promise seems to be a hollow one. Many call for the resumption of protests.
La Vang is the greatest sanctuary in Vietnam commemorating a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary that was seen there in 1798. The site has been rebuilt on several occasions and is an important site of pilgrimage for Catholics in Vietnam.
The tradition of Our Lady of La Vang dates back to the time when Catholics were harshly persecuted during the period of 261 years from 1625 to 1886. During that time, there were approximately 130,000 victims to these persecutions, spread all over the country. The Church suffered the worst persecutions under the kingdom of Minh Mang (1820-1840), the "Nero of Indochina".
Many people who sought refuge in the forest of La Vang, reported that in many occasions Our Lady appeared to comfort them, to heal their illness, and to protect them.
In 1961, Vietnam Conference of Catholic Bishops designated the church of La Vang as the National Sacred Marian Centre. In the following year, Pope John XXIII elevated it to the rank of Minor Basilica. On June 19, 1988, Pope John Paul II publicly recognized the importance of Our Lady of La Vang and expressed desire to rebuild the La Vang Basilica in the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the first vision.

Threats and media attacks against the Catholics of Dong Da

After
summoning the superior of the Redemptorists, the authorities have launched a
campaign of accusations on national television and in the newspapers, with
accusations against the faithful who are asking for the restitution of the land
of the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Hanoi, and calls for "drastic
action" against them.
Hanoi (AsiaNews) - The latest threat seems to have been aimed at Fr Vu Khoi Phung, superior of the Redemptorists in Vietnam, who was ordered to present himself before the People’s Committee of Dong Da District, where he could be arrested. After the passing of the April 6 ultimatum requiring demonstrators to leave the land of the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Hanoi, which they are asking to be given back, the affair seems to have halted for the moment on the level of threats and attacks in the press.
Since Monday, in fact, national television and newspapers have been referring to the matter by affirming that the demonstrators are occupying property belonging to the state, disturbing the public order, holding illegal prayer meetings in public areas, and erecting, also illegally, crucifixes and images of the Virgin. But none of this appears in the Vietnamese media in English and French, destined for foreigners and dedicated to the country's international image.
Concern is being created by the call, also advanced by the national media, for "drastic action" against the demonstrators who, since January 6, have been meeting peacefully in prayer on parish property. Currently several hundred of them have erected tents there, and each day, after morning and evening Mass, the Redemptorists lead a procession with a large cross at the front. They are asking for the restitution of the area taken from them in 1928: 60,000 square metres on which were built the church, the convent, and the seminary. In 1954, with the rise to power of the communist party, the religious were imprisoned or deported. The 60,000 square metres of their property were reduced to 2,700. The rest was gradually used up by the public authorities. Since then, there have been repeated petitions to ask for the restitution of the land, on which a hospital has also been built, while some of it has been given to state-run companies and members of the government. The most recent case, from the beginning of the year, is the granting of part of the land to a packaging company, Chiến Thắng.
Police agents, both in uniform and in plainclothes, are now openly photographing and filming those present.

Vietnamese Christian prisoner tortured to death
A Vietnamese
Catholic from a Montagnard village has died in prison after being arrested and
tortured by police, the Montagnard Foundation International has alleged.
Rahlan Hen from Ploi Beng village in Giala Province died last month while
serving a six year jail term, "for refusing to join the church of (a local
official) Siu Kim", the Foundation says.
"Many Degar Montagnard Christians disagree with the practices of this church and
feel that Siu Kim is actually teaching people to worship the government and not
God," MFI explained. "This is why Rahlan Hen refused to join. Because of this,
the government decided to arrest him in June 2006.
"The Vietnamese government sent security police along with riot police to his
house and arrested him. They handcuffed him and began to beat and kick him
severely," said MFI. "They dragged him from his house, stomping on him with
their heavy military boots until he lost consciousness and then they threw his
body in their jeep and took him to the district of Ia Grai prison," the
Foundation says.
"At this prison facility, the security police repeatedly beat and tortured him.
They kicked, punched, stomped on and shocked him with electric rods." He was
reportedly transferred to several other prison facilities.
Before he died, his wife visited him at the Phu Yen Province prison, and saw
that "one of his legs was paralysed and that he could barely walk," MFI told
BosNewsLife." She was overcome with sorrow, but could do nothing to help him.
All she could offer him was her tears."
Elsewhere in the Central Highlands, Degar-Montagnard Christians have also been
targeted by security forces in recent months, including in Ploi Kuk Tu, in
Gialai Province, where 44 year old Dinh Plok lost his farm and belongings for
"refusing to sign a document renouncing his Christian faith," MFI said.

Spirituality makes for happy children: Canadian study
Spirituality
is a major contributor to a child's happiness, even more than for adults, a
Canadian study has found.
USA Today reports that the new study by researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) tested 315 children aged 9 to 12, measuring spirituality and other factors such as temperament and social relations that can affect an individual's sense of happiness.
"Our goal was to see whether there's a relation between spirituality and happiness," said Mark Holder, associate professor of psychology and the study's co-author.
"We knew going in that there was such a relation in adults, so we took multiple measures of spirituality and happiness in children."
Past studies have shown that in adults, spiritual feelings and higher levels of religious behaviour typically account for about 5% of a person's overall happiness, a UBC statement added.
The results of the UBC study came as a surprise: 6.5 to 16.5 percent of children's happiness can be accounted for by spirituality.
"From our perspective, it's a whopping big effect," said Holder. "I expected it to be much less, as I thought their spirituality would be too immature to account for their well-being."
Children in the study were asked to rate statements such as "I feel a higher power's presence," and answer questions including, "how often do you pray or meditate privately outside of church or other places of worship?"
Parents were also asked to describe each child's apparent happiness and spirituality, and teachers rated each child's happiness level.
The study's authors plan to conduct the same research in India to see whether children score similar results in a country not dominated by Christianity.
